My 10 Favorite 80's Tracks

After watching 'Take Me Home Tonight' this evening, I decided I needed to write this little entry. So much great music, and personally my favorite era for music, the 80's. I was born in the late 80's… 1987 to be exact, but that didn't stop me from falling in love with 80's music as a kid, and it still sticks with me today. Here's a list of my favorite 80's songs in no particular order…

1) "Modern Love" by David Bowie

I'm really not a Bowie fan, by any means, but this is probably my all-time favorite 80's song. Not sure why… could be because my dad used to record music videos onto VHS tapes back in the day and this was on there. All I know is it's damn catchy and it has a big, sexy saxophone solo, that I still dig every time I hear it.

2) "Hold Me Now" by Thompson Twins

Again, I have no idea why I love this song so much. Just something about it that anytime I hear it, I have to stop and listen to it. I think it could be that it's a song that can be related to. At some point in your life, you go through a moment where you feel what this song is describing. It's just a great song.

3) "Out of Touch" by Hall & Oates

I didn't realize how much I love Hall & Oates until recently actually. They have so many great songs, but this one is the one that stands out to me… Catchy vocals, great synthesizers. It's got all the things I love about a great 80's track. Plus, John Oates had a killer mustache…

4) "Time After Time" by Cyndi Lauper

I know what you're thinking, big suprise, who wouldn't have this on an 80's list? But my love for Cyndi reaches far deeper than those who just know her hit songs. I haven't been able to make a list yet, where Cyndi hasn't appeared. She is one of my biggest musical influences. If we're gonna go with a ballad from the 80's, this is gonna be it. Time After Time has been a national treasure for 80's music ever since it was released, all because she wanted to prove she had the songwriting gift that the studio wasn't sure she had…

5) "Let's Go Crazy" by Prince

The Purple Rain soundtrack will always be my favorite Prince album and the is the coup de grâce of it all. The song opened the movie with such a fantastic energy and the song just gets me pumped up every time I hear it. I even have a friend that wants it played at her funeral, and all I can think is, what a party that would be…

6) "Your Love" by The Outfield

This song snuck in a little late in my life. I didn't hear it until just a few years ago, but it sticks with me. Just a great rock track and I have heard some great cover versions of it as well, but The Outfield will always be the true original artist and no one will perform it better.

7) "Got My Mind Set On You" by George Harrison

An infectious song that I used to hear alot as a kid and then it disappeared on me for quite some time, to only reappear. I never realized as a kid that the guy who sang this was none other than a Beatle himself, George Harrison. Guess I just never expected this sound from a member of The Beatles.

8) "(Just Like) Starting Over" by John Lennon

And speaking of The Beatles, this is the greatest track any Beatle ever recorded solo. I fell in love with the music of John Lennon as an early teen. My grandparents and parents got the Lennon Legend album and I used to listen to it over and over. But this track is ah-ma-zing. I've always loved the triangle intro, followed by the ballady intro, to only jump into this hopping, jazzy-like track. It's just phenomenal.

9) "Let My Love Open The Door" by Pete Townshend

This track is just a simply delightful, happy track. I dare you to listen to this song and try not to sing along. Damn near impossible. It's been used in so many movies, and for good reason. It's sets a mood. There's also a great remix of this song done as a more slow ballad, and it's just as great.

10) "Have A Little Faith In Me" by John Hiatt

I feel in love with this song just a couple years ago. Such a soulful, heartfelt track. His voice matches the mood he was projecting so well. I hear this song, close my eyes and belt along. It just takes me to a wonderful place in my mind.
