September 2011

September 2011

There were a whole lot of new releases in September; I couldn’t purchase them all but I feel like I picked some good ones. If you are reading this and expecting something profound or maybe just readable please keep an open mind, I am not a professional reviewer.

Primus - Green Naugahyde
This one probably won’t win over any new fans but as for me, this one rocks! With some fat bass playing and quirky songs after a quick preview of the album I knew I had to have it. It definitely did not disappoint.

Mastodon - The Hunter
I love this album. I’m fairly new to Mastodon, but I knew after I heard Crack the Skye that there was something to the hype. It’s a bit more straightforward than the other albums that I’ve heard, but catchy as hell. I didn’t care to spring for the deluxe edition as the extras didn’t sound all that great to me. This will definitely be getting plenty of air time on the iPod for sure!

Wilco - The Whole Love
This is a great album and starts off with a bang with the “Art of Almost”. The album has a good mix between more experimental and lighter acoustic fare. I originally thought I would pass this one up but the reviews were pretty glowing so my curiosity got the best of me.

Two more albums I was able to get a hold of this month were:

Dream Theater - A Dramatic Turn Of Events
I think this is a pretty strong release for Dream Theater. If you are familiar with them you will have an idea what this sounds like already. Not necessarily memorable, but it’s probably more that I haven’t spent enough time listening to it.

The Bangles - Sweetheart of the Sun
This one is really good, after all these years these girls can still sing. This one’s getting plenty of time on the iPod as well.

Concerts:
I went to the Jack FM show out in Irvine California. There were six bands including: Marcy Playground, Everclear, Dramarama, Sir Mix-A-Lot, Heart and Def Leppard. My wife and I had a great time at the concert. I had a few beers which always makes everything awesome. All of the bands gave an awesome performance. What was funny was Sir Mix-A-Lot played for only 15 minutes where everyone else got about 30 – 40 minutes. That gave him enough time to cover 2 songs, played the hit and then quickly exited the stage. Heart was awesome and played all of their classic songs and a couple of Zeppelin covers. I had seen them once before and they definitely did not disappoint this time. This was the first time I had seen Def Leppard and was really a treat. I was a little disappointed that the only thing they played off of High N’ Dry was “Bringing On the Heartbreak”. But other than that their set was great. I will definitely be heading out to next year’s show for sure!

Next month:

Björk - Biophilia : Got this on pre-order, getting pretty excited. Love my Bjork!
St. Vincent - Strange Mercy : A September release and I’m getting it in October, better late than never.

Concerts:
Foo Fighters at the Great Western Forum

Non Concerts:
Rock N’ Roll Half Marathon in Los Angeles with a performance from Brett Michaels.

That is all for now…..
