How I discovered my top 10 artists

1. Nine Inch Nails
High school! 1993-ish (yes, I'm old). At the time I heard Head Like a Hole and Closer but wasn't that into it. Then this year I heard Capital G and bought Year Zero. Something clicked for me and now I'm sorta kinda obsessed…
First heard: "Head Like a Hole"
Favorite: Sooo many - I guess I'll go with "Capital G"

2. Moby
Also first heard in high school. Saw live on the second stage at Lollapalooza 1995 - one of the best days of my life. Really great music to study/work/dance to. Moby's Journal is also worth a read - he updates frequently. Quite an interesting person - how many progressive vegan Christian musicians are there?
First heard: Feeling So Real
Favorite: Dream About me

3. Saul Williams
Got into it via Trent Reznor's work on The Inevitable Rise and Liberation of Niggy Tardust!.
First heard: List of Demands (Reparations)
Favorite: DNA

4. Guided By Voices
bob_dobbs really likes them and introduced me to their greatest hits this year.
First heard: A Salty Salute
Favorite: Twilight Campfighter

5. Camille
Found her this year, don't remember how… probably eMusic. I don't speak French, but I like her voice and the playful quality of her songs.
First heard: 1,2,3
Favorite: Le Sac Des Filles

6. Mary Prankster
I read some of her lyrics on Gillen's LiveJournal, and had to download Breakfast. Freaking hilarious.
First heard: "Breakfast"
Favorite: same

7. Halo33
Halo33 and I have very similar taste, and I noticed after friending him that he had done some NIN remixes. They are excellent, and free.
First heard: Me, I'm Not
Favorite: New Blood - an original track, not an NIN remix.

8. Regina Spektor
Really talented, I just found out about her this year. I think that I checked her out because she came up as similar to Tori Amos and Fiona Apple.
First heard: Ne Me Quitte Pas
Favorite: same

9. Amy Winehouse
OK, she's a little over-hyped, and a little gimmicky. But some of her songs are appealing.
First heard: You Know I'm No Good
Favorite: Me & Mr Jones

10. Alec Empire
I stumbled across Alec Empire on eMusic, before realizing that he had any influence on NIN. A couple of his songs also remind me of my husband's band, Psychodelic Freakout. I only have one of his old albums - what I've heard of his newer stuff doesn't sound as good to me.
First heard: Get Some
Favorite: I'm Gonna Die If I Fall Asleep Again
