Its The End... 2008 in Music

Its getting to that time again, this 12-month phase is nearing its end and so arbitrary judgements of worth must be made on things that occurred within that phase.

Looking back at 2008 in my iTunes library I realise what a superlative year it has been and its rather difficult to choose something to recognise above all others. Particularly because I will have already deleted something I didn't like.

So lets see what I kept…

R.E.M. - Accelerate
Cage The Elephant - Cage The Elephant
The Raconteurs - Consolers Of The Lonely
TV On The Radio - Dear Science
The Fireman - Electric Arguments
Grace Jones - Hurricane
Seasick Steve - I Started Out With Nothin' And I Still Got Most Of I Left
Monkey: Journey To The West
Ringo Starr - Liverpool 8
Nitin Sawhney - London Undersound
Sigur Rós - Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust
Glen Campbell - Meet Glen Campbell
The Breeders - Mountain Battles
Elvis Costello - Momofuku
Mudcrutch - Mudcrutch
Kaiser Chiefs - Off With Their Heads
Colour Revolt - Plunder, Beg and Curse
For A Minor Reflection - Reistu þig við, sólin er komin á loft
Jakob Dylan - Seeing Things
The Last Shadow Puppets - The Age Of The Understatement
Portishead - Third
Vampire Weekend - Vampire Weekend
Ladytron - Velocifero
thenewno2 - You Are Here
The Zutons - You Can Do Anything

Wow, look at all those. That's 24 albums. TWO great albums a month.

Some are not hugely interesting, but a worth listening to under certain circumstances, or because of the achievement of the people behind the music. Some are massively entertaining pieces of music, while others I feel have taken music somewhere and done something that no one else is.

So with that in mind, I'm picking out Portishead, The Breeders, Damon Albarn (chiefly responsible for Monkey) and The Fireman as having produced the most interesting music this year. While Vampire Weekend, Sigur Rós, The Last Shadow Puppets, Cage The Elephant, Elvis Costello and TV On The Radio have made brilliantly entertaining albums.

But I love listening to everyone in that list above.

And as for live music, I've had the great pleasure and privilege to see The Breeders, Colour Revolt, Sigur Rós, Jarvis Cocker, Vampire Weekend and the music of Scott Walker.

What a great year it has been.
