Maplejet's thoughts - June 10, 2010

Chaos and lots of things happening around the music world. Now time for my thoughts.

GUESS WHO'S BACK, BACK AGAIN

It all came quickly…first the single, then it leaked…the result…now a candidate for best album of the year despite what the haters (and indie pitchfork midgets) think. Eminem is back in full colors with Recovery. Gone all the filler songs that pulled Encore down and the accents that ruined Relapse…he even acknowledges it. Also are the lack of other rappers as it's just appearances from P!nk, Rihanna, Lil Wayne and Kobe. His raps, come out blaring in full force, hardcore. The songs lean more towards , but his vocals come out as . Some of the highlights include 25 to Life, a track that starts out as if it was another hate track to his ex-wife Kim…but in the end, it's a metaphor and the Kim really was…hip-hop.

Also a great use of sample on No Love (feat. Lil Wayne) as What is Love is sampled…yes…the Roxbury song…and it's sampled good…Lil Wanye starts out weak on his verse but he does pick up and it's all about Eminem. You're Never Over pays tribute to the fallen Proof and samples Cry Little Sister from the Lost Boys soundtrack, really well. There's at least 5 tracks I'm digging right now and others are growing on me fast. Could be AotY, but we also have Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco waiting their turns as well with new releases from both coming later this year. A lot of people are still complaining about the new album, stating that it's not the Eminem they know…what? you want him to still sing about popping mushrooms with girls, banging prostitutes in trailer parks…its evolution and maturity…Eminem's in a new phase.

The song Love the Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) is the next single and may pick up those teenage posers who only listen for their pop stars like Rihanna.

Of course, I almost forgot the leadoff single (which IMO should have also utilized a guest on the chorus), Not Afraid:

Welcome back Eminem!!! Keep hip-hop alive!

Ronnie James Dio…Metal Legend…

*sighs*…no one wants to see this happens. Unfortunately for Ronnie James Dio, his battle with stomach cancer was lost, and he passed away…to many, he was a metal icon. And it's sad to see him pass away…his work with Black Sabbath (I like Dio era a lot), Rainbow, Elf, and of course his solo career as Dio. He's left behind several treasures and a great contribution to metal…and he was still rocking with Heaven & Hell (basically dio-era Black Sabbath).

I've started to really go through his library to hear his music more than just Sabbath. But…it's just tough to see him go away…and it seems like this music deaths are just sad…already earlier in the year, Avenged Sevenfold's drummer The Rev died of natural causes. What else do we need right now.

Speaking of Avenged Sevenfold…

IT'S YOUR FUCKING NIGHTMARE

Upon release of AX7's single Nightmare, their new album Nightmare quickly jumped up as my most anticipated release…to my shock, Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy helped with recording the drums and will tour with AX7 until the end of the year at which point he will return to DT to work on a follow-up to last year's album…I'm surprised that a lot of people didn't think Portnoy could pull off the job with filling in for the Rev…Portnoy is really one of the greatest modern drummers out there, very likely more technically proficient than The Rev. and of course he did a good job on Nightmare.

I think this album will be a mix of the last 2 albums…still the sound from Avenged Sevenfold, but back to their progressive roots from City of Evil…should be sick and wicked.

This song's release co-incided with the end of my favorite TV show 24…I almost felt like this song pretty much fit in with the last part of the season with Jack Bauer…I won't spoil anything for those who are still working through the show as we speak, but it was one of the greatest stretches of TV…someone needs to make a fan-made clip of Jack Bauer with the Nightmare song!!

Maplejet vs. The elitist snobby Lady Gaga defender who also listens to Tool and Metallica and defends Gaga against those he claim are trolls but just simply don't get the appeal

First off, I'll be honest with you, I don't mind Lady Gaga despite the Man Gaga jokes I've made in the past to tick this guy off. To be honest, ever since a certain gang from Vancouver sang that damn rock song for the billionth time on top 40 format, I ditched it (just before the Jonas Bros and Miley Cyrus arrived) in favor of the active rock format which led to stuff like Alice in Chains and Tool being introduced to me.

On topic, like I said, Lady Gaga is talented compared to most of pop today (not sure how much this is) as she writes her own songs…in fact, I never heard a song of her's in entirety until just a few months ago. That song was Bad Romance as suggested by several…members of the my home message board…wasn't really as bad as people made it out to be. Beats are good, lyrics are OK, production is great.

BUT WE HAVE A MUSIC VIDEO THAT HAS OVER 200,000,000 views on youtube and is now the most viewed youtube clip.

The Bad Romance clip.

Um…what is it supposed to be…why is it deserving of the 200,000,000 views. I know she's trying to make it look artsy, but I don't get it…and I'm still struggling with her new video which was being commented every 3 seconds…that is Alejandro, which also is decent…but the music video…I'm open minded and gave it 2 VIEWS to figure out it…it came out stale though…figured out it was a song for the LGBT community, many of which who are fans of her music…possibly political undertones to regarding Don't Ask Don't Tell in the United States of America., but I just…gave up on it.

Probably the one that caught my attention was Poker Face. Or is it the version done by Eric Cartman? And the fact that in addition to 4 Lady Gaga tracks, the Eric Cartman version…was included in Rock Band 2…I'll admit it, the Eric Cartman version…brilliant idea!! HERE:

HAHAHA…spent a whole day going through this version and the parodies, including Christopher Walken's spoken rendition of the song…

Like I said, I don't mind her music, but I don't get the appeal of her vids.

Regarding Bad Romance though, if you didn't hear it yet, 30 Seconds to Mars had their own take of the song which is totally different, not intended to be a joke cover, but a different interpretation:

Pop may be listenable now, and then this ugly chick named Kesha comes with Tik Tok and just ruins any hope for pop with auto-tune…*sighs*

Supermassive Eye Sore

Muse released a new single, but instead of it coming from The Resistance, it was a single to coincide with Twlight Saga: Eclipse movie…Neutron Star Collision (Love is Forever)…while the song is OK and takes a little bit from all eras of Muse into one song with less than stellar lyrics…the music video…oh god…once those clips were intervened with the video…i stopped watching…just…so…

We'll forget about that clip though…but Muse is still awesome.

Sarah Palin

ASSHOLE that needs to fucking get out of my TV…let's move on

Hip-hop deficiency alert

I need more hip-hop…already have Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast, Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Beastie Boys in my library…will be adding on Public Enemy soon, but who else should I look into…some acts please, albums, and a few songs worth looking at first.

INCOMING ONSLAUGHT

The next few months will see more bands/artists entering my library…I won't tell who they are…but thanks to a listening topic on the message boards, I picked up some new acts who I will get into soon…my music taste is evolving once more…hopefully into stuff I like. And only stuff that I like.
