Advice for artists

Pick an original name!
It is no point in picking the same name as five other artists already use. Try to think of something original. I find it amazing that you start a band now and don't bother to check if there are other bands with the same name. There is even a nice tool available at http://furia.com/isthisbandnametaken/
If the band was started in the 70s or 80s and perhaps early 90s I could understand it, but now?

Pick original names for your releases as well!
Please try to get good names for your releases as well. Do not use "Unknown Album". Naming your début album after the band may work if you have an original name (see above). When you pick a good name if may be a good idea to not use the same name for album, EP and single. Try to have different names for different type of releases.

Get covers for your releases!
Even if most people listen to music either streaming or from file album covers are still important. There is nothing that says "We put no effort into our releases" as having no album cover. And please, no releases called "Unknown Album" or "Internet Release".
Just take a picture, make it square and type the name of the release and add your logo (you do have a logo, right?).

Get listed!
Please read MusicBrainz: And Why It Matters. It talks mostly about the BBC, but data from MusicBrainz is also behind many other sites including Last.fm. So if you want to get more exposure it may be a good idea to add your discography to MusicBrainz.

If you have more time on your hands you might also want to get listed on Discogs. There is also AllMusicGuide, but I find them slow and unresponsive so it's not really worth the effort.
