What Music to play at work?

2006年 02月 16日 23:00

I work in a local pub, and most of the time the management put on some Mowtown Gold Collection. Which gets a little boring after a while. However when management aren't around, my colleagues decide to put on James Blunt(I will kill myself if i hear the album once more), and KT Tunstall, and Jack Johnson(occationally). To the point, yesturday Courtney (colleague) decided to put on some Kaiser Cheifs which caused a bit of a stir from the older customers and regulars. So it got us thinking at what music we could get away with as good background music in the pub.

My personal favourites are Ben Folds, Death Cab for Cutie, Bloc Party as a suggestion. So what i'm asking for is; any suggestions for some cool background music that customers of all ages from students to oaps would like?

    ..Rilo Kiley?

Background music is always pretty hard to think about, because it depends so much of the audience..

Bloc Party is a good choice. 'This Modern Love', 'So Here We Are' & 'Two More Years' are quite nice tracks to play in the background or loud for that matter. Its hard to decide, maybe some Jazz or something (Sadly i dont know much Jazz music) but Jazz & Blues is quite laid back....

    Haha
Work, Work, Work (Pub, Club, Sleep) by The Rakes?
    And I agree, Bloc Party.

And who could forget, Frank Sinatra!

I love Tarantino's soundtracks. Especially Jackie Brown or Reservoir dogs.

    Rage Against The Machine!

Nah, what about Idlewild? Some of the tracks on the latest album Warnings/Promises fit into the 'mellow but good' section.

My other suggestions could be something like Pixies, Urge Overkill, Dr. John or The Kinks. Hard to imagine that someone could find them irritating enough to feel unconfortable.

Some good suggestions! I'll have to get some Kinks and Idlewild! I managed to play some Ben Folds, The Who and Bloc Party at the pub over the weekend, The Who seemed to go down well probabily because its familar to the slightly older people. Keep it coming!

I agree that Jazz is good background/work music. Miles Davis especially.
    Classical music is good too.

How about Amnesiac by Radiohead? Strangely strange ambience.

Talking of ambience, Boards Of Canada, but that might be slightly too electronic for some tastes.

Dropkick Murphys, Against Me!, Tom Waits, Kind Of Like Spitting... maybe even Bright Eyes. Seriously.

Oh shit, my bad - I missed the 'all ages' part. I stand by Tom Waits, still - though.

It depends so much on what the crowd is, and whether the music is there to be purely background - not really listened to all, heard more or less subliminally - or quiet entertainment, or challenge and expand musical boundaries.

Interestingly, I think the Radiohead album actually works on all three levels. Bjorks last three albums, Homogenic, Verspertine and Medulla - the last two particularly - might also qualify here.

DJ Shadow's Preemptive Strike might be and interesting choice here as well.

Unless of course the older customers you mention are really older - say 50 years plus - in which case you might want to stick to variations on the Motown albums.

Some variations to consider: recently released Solomon Burke collections; Otis Redding collections; early Stones; the Beatles 1 collection; the Phil Spector collection.

You might also consider exploring some jazz vocal-type albums that would have appeal for older crowds (even 80+) but also have fresh and cool qualities that could appeal to the 20-somethings. Things like Cole Porter, Gershwin and, to a lesser extent, Irving Berlin. The albums of Ella Fitzgerald with Louis Armstrong are pretty wonderful.

Another possibility is Burt Bacharach. Genuinely appealing to the 50-60 crowd, but with a weird kind of hip nostalgia appeal to 30-40 year olds, and a kind of ironic coolness as well, authorized recently by his collaborative work with Elvis Costello.

Hmm- Students to OAP's? How about some Johnny Cash, Sinatra, Andy Williams, Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, The Stones? Plus I think soundtrack albums was a good suggestion by frakassor.
