Hey Zach, good to hear from you. I'm not crazy busy, but busy enough. So I understand. Thanks for the compliment about the picture. I've always loved Kris Kristofferson's music, but since buying a vinyl album of his random while at Amoeba in L.A. I've been on a huge kick. Can't stop listening to him really. I'll see him and Merle Haggard in concert this Wednesday. Have you heard the new R.E.M.?

Thanks, Herodotus... You are a prince among men! I'll try to get the band a little further north and west of where we've previously been the next time we tour... probably this summer. And yeah... Daytrotter!!!

oh so yes i’ve seen some good acts this year. Noisy Pig came up this past summer, along with some awesome noise acts like Fire Island, AK, and during the most recent tour ( with Narwhalz of Sound, and Picture Planes), Jason Adam Baker flew himself to join for fun. i didn’t realize at the time he was here, but apparently he was a drummer for Pinback and has ties to Lightning Bolt. regardless his noise music (Syntovs, or something like that—i’ll get back to you on it) was really good. he sold all of his music on tape cassette, which i do love. i see you’re going to mad shows huh? damn it must be fun to just drive around for a bit and suddenly be in another state. what a luxurious life you must lead Zach!

i was once in a scrap band where we had full access to a woodshop and metal welder, so we made use of that and just created the most epic percussion instruments out of repurposed junk. anywhos, that’s down memory lane, i could elaborate sometime if you’d like. oh, by the way, it’s so fucking great that you opened up a record shop! i can’t wait to visit. i also dig that your town has radio stations not under clear channel. i guess in alaska one may be limited to certain air waves…there’s one college station and two other public radio stations, at least accessible in anchorage. and speaking of anchorage, you are always more than welcome here too! i’d recommend the summer time if anything, i’ll be hopefully really involved with a project and several great acts are coming up to tour this summer. i’d love to show you around the state. i heard a rumour that explosions may be playing in fairbanks….if that’s the case it’s a 6 hour road trip. such fun! shame i don’t drive...

you know, i think the term scalping may just have come from an illegal method of trade or maybe just has a politically incorrect connotation. can’t say i actually know though, as i just am theorizing. oddly enough the venue wouldn’t refund me but encouraged ‘scalping’, so i just stood at the entrance and sold it to someone with cash for 5 bucks less. oh so in regards to a music project it’s still in the works. i can’t say i’m sure of anything at this point, as i am just now starting to play music again. i recently picked up a washboard and have been practicing mainly with that. i do want to use only a few pieces from my drum set (floor tom and snare perhaps), maybe create my own percussion device, tambo and tobacco cans…since i don’t know what genre to call whatever it is i may play, i can’t tell you much else! i like tinkery sounds though.

yeah so CJ definitely has an epic voice. i like those baritone sounding people, or like david berman from the silver jews. moving yet simple lyrics usually hit the spot with those kinds of vocals.

good morning! so i ended up scalping my ticket for ozomatli tonight and staying in, although i was productive in the meantime planning a new music project, fixing a dread, cutting some hair and enjoying cheap yet decent beer. the first tap shows are usually packed and are hellish going to alone. plus i noticed they check yer bags, no thnx! anyways, it's fucking awesome you opened up your own shop! i would love to come check it out. in fact, if i find myself on the road this summer (which is somewhat the plan) i just may. ok what the fuck, halo benders play on the radio in idaho?! that's really great, i'm already convinced your state may be a better place to live. the winters here in alaska are usually tolerable, but i've been here for most of em. pretty tired of it actually and am looking to relocate before the next one. not really sure what the plan is, but i'm willing and open minded to change. it's going to be a good year. can you believe i'm using damn near 1000 characters?!

It probably did just mean "buy our shoes, dammit - just do it". But it could still mean "live your life, dammit - just do it" too :P And no, I actually had no idea about the Chuck Taylors. Then again, I don't tend to wear shoes at all (not if I don't have to, anyway) but that's still pretty lame. Oh, the weather here? Oh well, you know, it's AWESOME! Per usual. Haha, actually this way it's not been so bad now that the wind's finally died down. Still chilly though. Not sure about Iowa, weather-wise or other aspects :P But have fun! Or pretend you're somewhere tropical?

I hope Iowa treats you well! I'll probably stick around Moscow for year three. I've got a lot of gifts to make and send off. Plus, there's work. I've gotten to listen to Y La Bamba a bit more and their recordings are good, but I think the live sound was a gem. As far as the music collection goes, it is still an act to be commended. You are brave, you're right, at least you get to send it off with people who are going to get some enjoyment from the things you previously enjoyed. What are a few things you've sent off with that feeling that someone is going to really love what they've gotten themselves into? Ugh, I am sick in bed, and can't think. Congestion is a blast. What was that slaughterhouse protest like? Going to have a radio show again in the spring?

haha, yes, that was me! I wasn't sure if it was you or someone else working so I apologize for not saying hello. I LOVED the show on tuesday. I was right up front so it was pretty incredible. I saw horse feathers at boaw so I guess I sort of knew what to expect but they blew me away again. y la bamba also blew me away. I'd heard a few of their recorded tracks before but didn't really think much of them. I need to go back and listen to some of their stuff again. also thanks for listening to my show! I really need to tune in to kuoi more often.

What did you think of the show on Tuesday? Y La Bamba kinda stole my heart. Horse Feathers had a pretty intimate set too, and I've seen Buffalo Death Beam before, once at Mikey's. For some reason I liked their set a Mikey's a little better. As far as PETA goes, I used to be pretty into them, but I got a little discouraged by some of their more extremist actions and discrepancies. What were your experiences with them like? Also, I've been meaning to give you a little more business, but I've got to wait until my next paycheck to give deadbeat another visit, has it been hard watching your collection go? Did you put it all in, or just the things you could part with? Got any crazy plans for the holidays?

At first I was wondering what Nike had to do with anything? But then I remembered! "Just do it." xD Good one! And it's true. Now they just have to tell us what "it" is and we'll be set! Yes, language and etymology both fascinate me muchly. But even when I look up meanings behind words or phrases I still wonder how someone decides on a certain arrangement of words or why some phrases get spread around the world while some are much more regional. *shrugs* Interesting stuff! And yes, haha, thank Al Gore for the internet! ;)

That sounds like quite the trip! :D And who said there's something wrong with lofty endeavors?! (Certainly not I!) And yeah, tourist traps are great for... being a tourist. You can get a feel for the culture and the people, but not really get to KNOW them, it seems. I've often wondered how people do the nomadic thing, too. I mean, I'd like to. And I suppose that a great deal of it is actually just committing yourself to the idea. Because if you decide to do something like that and then just kind of throw yourself into it then it probably just sort of... comes to you. Like... if you kind of force yourself into a situation then you don't really have a choice but to succeed, right? :P Or something. And yes, idioms and the like can be very interesting (or very stupid) sometimes. It makes you wonder why some of them became so popular and have stayed popular for so many years. *shrugs* As you said - silly humans!

Oh and shrinky dinks, you can get the sheets at Michael's and draw whatever you want on them, cut them out and bake them. I don't know if you can get pre-made ones or not. I draw whatever I feel like at the time or trace pictures/comic strips out of books. Most have them have turned out really well. As far as the comics go, I haven't been reading as much lately, but I love Moebius, Gipi, Mazzuchelli, Jason, CF, Chris Ware and basically, whatever I can get my hands on. Its been a long run of borrowing all my friends' books over the past year. Do you read comics?

I was thinking you meant guilt. It's a good point, even though environmentalism as a form of escapism seems like it would eventually lead down a rather muddied path. I have been meaning to read Nietzsche. I have the 'portable' Nietzsche. I feel guilty about not having read it yet. I think part of the problem with the co-op is that a lot of the cooks they hire/ have hired don't have cooking experience and don't know enough about complimentary flavors and cooking methods to experiment with any of the recipes. I haven't eaten there very recently though. I made coconut rice there once, turned out pretty good. :) 10 years is pretty impressive, do you manage a pretty balanced diet? I tried a vegetarian diet for a short while, it worked fairly well when I was cooking regularly and able to keep track of what I was eating. I've been pretty interested in doing more research. I feel like the sources I find are always biased and jaded on either side. You were never a peta pet right? :)

Well, I've successfully refrained from going out of doors, but I've unsuccessfully done anything except listen to music and look for packed away art supplies with no success. I feel like a vegan restaurant could be a pretty successful business here. I suppose the Co-Op has vegan options, but I think their food is a little below par. Are you vegan for spiritual reasons? As far as your emotion and environmental behavior topic, what were your ideas? (I'm guessing all in regard to the state of the environment?) By all means, let's get the government off its hands and make it stop crying like a baby. How did your snow day turn out?

Not only have I not been outside of the U.S., I've never been out of the three states I've mentioned (Idaho, Oregon, and Missouri) except for to travel between them! O.o I've also decided that no where is as good as people make it out to be, but everywhere is as good as what you make of it... Of course, I don't make much of Missouri, hah! And those all sound like good picks. Africa or eastern Europe would be most interesting, methinks. Have YOU been out of the country, excluding Canada?
操作

Yes, I feel like if I'm going to be in the U.S. for any extended amount of time I'd like to be in the northwest, for sure. Of course, I've never been out east, but that's beside the point! There's something so... romanticized! About The Lonesome Crowded West (and I love that album!) :) And even though I haven't lived there in years I feel like I'd rather be there than here. But anywhere except here, eh? Haha. I've also considered Arizona or Nevada, but I think I'd like to be near the ocean for a while. I never really have been... As for if I could move ANYwhere? In the world? New Zealand, definitely. For many reasons. Not least of all because it's so... gorgeous! But I'd also like to at least visit... well, anywhere in the UK. Or maybe Australia. Canada? Italy! *shrugs* I'd like to travel a lot, eventually :) Where would you visit/move? If you had the opportunity to go ANYwhere?

There ARE plenty of reasons to hate it! :D The northern most southern state, indeed! People who have never been here get confused when I describe it as "the south". But it may as well be... And yes, I find it infinitely frustrating when I talk about missing mountains and someone says "Yeah, but what about the Ozarks?" and I'm like "Yeah, but what about the Cascades?!" (I used to live in Oregon, too, haha). I've heard good things about Moscow. I have a few specific places in mind. Most of them are out of the country and, therefore, out of the question, at the moment. But I have family in Idaho I need to visit before too long. And I've been thinking a lot about Oregon, again. Or somewhere in California, maybe... Any other suggestions? :P

Hahaha, does anybody live in misery by choice? Oh, I'm sorry! I mean Missouri :) And yes, there is some beautiful country here (even if there are no mountains!). But I moved here when I was fairly young, so no, it wasn't really by choice. Not really, anyway. Now I'm kind of ready to go somewhere else, though. Just not sure where! How do you like Moscow?

Nope, I've lived in Missouri for about seven years now. Haha, I've only recently started listening to Biffy Clyro. Haha, that is funny. Currently I am under a blanket, I have slept for about 11 hours and am videos of Ariel Pink. I don't have work today, and today is going to be great. I think I want to get caught up on some of the comics my friends have lent me, and make some shrinky dink magnets for a friend who said he was going to send me some music for free. What will you be reading? No plans for the snow, I walked around in it all day yesterday. I used to like to ski and snowboard but it's too expensive. As far as the bagel shop goes, I went with a friend to the owner's Thanksgiving party and we got to talking, not sure if I will get hired but a couple people are leaving. You can custom order the bagelwiches and just tell them what you'd like on it. Or I'm sure you could put in a suggestion. If I get a job there, I'll see what strings I can pull. I usually order off that menu and have them give or take an ingredient to mix it up. Are there restaurants around here that have a good vegan menu?

Soon after you mentioned the power going out... it did. My power is still on and off. Luckily I have a lot of candles but my apartment got really cold. AND I'm worried that all my new groceries have started spoiling in the fridge. My fish and snake are probably upset as well. There are huge branches scattered around in the yard, but no broken windows. A fireplace sounds lovely. As far as the grocery situation goes, I'm usually punking around on two legs or using the transit because I don't have a car. My mother was in town returning the drumset I'd left behind four years ago and we took a little trip. I know what you mean about getting food for elaborate meals and it was worse because I couldn't think about cooking when I was beyond even thinking about sleeping. I managed to plan out lasagna. Pretty proud of that.

Time to come back to the customers. As far as sleeping goes, we may have traded. After today I can only say that going grocery shopping for the month on no sleep is a foolish idea. How's this weather treating your windows? I keep imagining a branch shattering the glass and having to duct tape spare trash bags ferociously around the open wound in my apartment. Oh, I wholeheartedly agree about the genres. Don't do it! It'll make everything harder for the two of you and it keeps people from considering new music as well. That is a bit silly that you have two systems going at once. Although, occasionally I enjoy looking for things by first name, last name is going to be the most functional. I don't think I know anyone who organizes their music by first name. :) You didn't decide to sell your entire collection did you? Regardless, by the looks of the store it was a big sacrifice... As far as my new job, they didn't mention anything about a raise in the future. It may have something to do with the charity aspect of the business but I'll get a 25% discount on things that are already cheap and I'll get to see things first as well. Hmmm. If I have any decent music that I don't want anymore perhaps I'll bring in some donations.

Oh, yes, it is safe to say I got a job at the Salvation Army. Minimum wage, I haven't seen you since high school... hah. It'll be a good job though. As far as the store goes, I enjoyed it. Your selection is indeed better than Paradise Ridge, there was Magnetic Fields playing in the background, and even though you didn't have a lot of space to work with there was room to walk around. The only thing I have to suggest, as of yet, is that you may want to, if you have the time, organize the cds alphabetically by more than just the first letter since there are no genre or artist divisions. I'm excited to see the rest of the vinyl. I'll stop in again soon.

The KUOI library is pretty great, I've been in there a few times with different people. Didn't learn anything new this time around, I think I should have said "Just show me which buttons do what" but I figure if I get a show sometime I'll just learn then. I had a good time picking out the good stuff on the new racks. Now I get to look forward to a busy busy busy day tomorrow writing, and hopefully get a much desired phone call from a business that needs a hired hand. Your paper sounds great. Membership is $60 for new members. You get write-up on their website and I think they also do some brochures and link your website, location, product/services, etc. If you're wanting to keep your business up to date with locals, it definitely wouldn't hurt. Mikey's and Hyperspuds both have awesome people that you can talk to about it. They'd probably be better than me about talking up the benefits. I've just gone to one half of one meeting and kept meaning to get signed up...(http://www.buylocalmoscow.com/) Deadbeat Records is a great name. Mine is Power House Cleaning.
