Remembering Whitney Houston

Whitney Houston died at age 48 earlier today in Los Angeles, as previously reported. The actress and singer had a prolific career, although was struggling to stay in the spotlight during the past few years. Houston’s death has already had a great impact on the music and entertainment communities, particular as she has passed the day before the Grammys.

Neil Portnow, CEO/President of The Recording Academy released a statement that said, “Six-time Grammy winner Whitney Houston was one of the world’s greatest pop singers of all time who leaves behind a robust musical soundtrack spanning the past three decades. Her powerful voice graced many memorable and award-winning songs. A light has been dimmed in our music community today, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, fans and all who have been touched by her beautiful voice.”
.

In honor of that legacy, we’d like to look back at all the moments that have made Houston a great entertainer, singer and actress.
.

Houston, who began her career as a model, was signed by record mogul Clive Davis, who subsequently became the singer’s mentor, in 1983 to Arista Records. In 2010 Davis said in an interview that accompanied Whitney Houston: The Deluxe 25th Anniversary Edition, “Whitney sang the song with such fervor, with such a natural vocal gift, with such passion, that I was stunned. I knew really right then and there that this was a special talent and I was blown away by her. There was no hesitation. I wanted to sign Whitney.”
.

The singer’s self-titled debut arrived in 1985, spawning several hit singles, including “Saving All My Love for You,” which landed at No. 1. The album eventually sold over 13 million copies and earned the singer three Grammy nominations, including one for Album of the Year (she won one statue that year for Best Female Pop Vocal).
