アバウトミー
Step-father to 3 guys.
Into 70s metal + prog rock, Miles Davis & anyone who worked with him, Norwegian jazz, ECM, DGM, British folk music, early and baroque music, Porcupine Tree, TMV, The Bays, West Ham, Peter Greenaway films, photography (but I'm not very good at it) and walking the dog.
Hates: the use of irrelevant superlatives, people from outside London who say " I couldn't possibly live there" as if they're so fucking special, when a really good song is too short, people who blame others because "they should have known better", and the incorrect use of apostrophes. Oh yeah, and war, poverty, bigotry, etc.
A Jazz fan dies and goes to heaven. When he gets to the Pearly Gates, St. Peter asks him where he'd like to go first - so the guy says he'd like to go to a jazz club.
When they get to the one St. Peter recommends, there's all sorts of people sitting at the bar listening to the music - Dizzy, Duke, Bird, etc. - but at the far end is a guy in a dazzling, well-cut suit, wearing shades and smoking.
"Who's that?" asks the guy.
"It's God," says St. Peter: "He thinks he's Miles Davis.
John Martyn:
"We’d check into a hotel drunk and Danny or I would slam a load of money on the counter and say, ‘That’s for the damage’. The receptionist would always look bemused and say, ‘There isn’t any’, then we’d say, ‘There fucking will be!’ "
Chet Baker:
"If I could play like Wynton, I wouldn't play like Wynton."
Claude Debussy:
"In opera, there is always too much singing."
Tom Morello:
"A good song should make you wanna tap your feet and get with your girl. A great song should destroy cops and set fire to the suburbs. I’m only interested in writing great songs."
Igor Stravinsky:
"Harpists spend 90 percent of their lives tuning their harps and 10 percent playing out of tune. "
Manfred Eicher:
"From the very beginning in the 70s I heard about crises, but when people realise there is someone who is respectfully treating people's expectations of quality and releasing music that has a high level of musicianship and interaction, they trust you and follow you."
Jeff Beck:
"I love it when people hear my music but can’t figure out what instrument I’m playing. What a cool compliment."
Charles Mingus
"If Bird were alive today, he would think he was living in a hall of mirrors"
Thomas Beecham
"The English may not like music, but they absolutely love the noise it makes."
