Abakuya

In 2005, Francis Essindi and Jimi Sofo met on the banks of a river in Basel, Switzerland and decided to travel together in Cameroon. Upon their return, they decided to launch their musical project Abakuya, named for the mascot of Ozila, a near-obsolete south Cameroonian traditional dance.

With an amalgamation of traditional and modern instruments, both electric and acoustic,
Abakuya’s music carries the listener on a powerful and enchanting rhythmic journey: a real call to dance and meditation.

This journey produced a musical album "Primitive Love" in 2008, marking the
return of the polyrhythmic traditions of central Africa. Since then, Abakuya’s sound has evolved and been enriched with new textures, weaving fine electro-acoustic compositions that are sometimes gentle, sometimes wild.
