2011 – The Ultimate Ratings List

Welcome to TheArtistBox/BrutalDeathMetalFreak01’s ratings 2011. I was meant to start journals like this way back when I started here at last.fm but never got the inspiration to do one, until now.

Why this year? Well this year is the year for me that I can concentrate on just 2011 and a few genres, rather doing a retrospective year like I did in 2010.

The ratings will be on all albums that I have listened to with a critic mind and some may not feature due to me personally not being ready to feature that particular genre or artist.

I have a certain criteria when it comes to rating an album and these are just some of the factors that go into the overall rating out of ten.

Factors

1) Presentation
2) Production
3) Power
4) Prestige

The four P’s as I call them and here are the explanation of them.

1) Presentation as always needs to be clean and direct. A cover of an album and the titles, grammar of the booklet and everything else are just as important as the music itself. At times more important if you take some genres like ambient.

2) Production is not a big deal for me, but if it is totally rotten the outcome of the album being good will be slim. To me production has to have depth to create the Power element of the album. Normally the production being clean and slick will lead to a great fusion of headbanging in heavy metal genres, calmness and swing in Jazz and perceptively the best classic you could want to hear.

3) Power, the one that will make or break the album, is the main product of the factors. It determines all the musical composing together like you can’t have Thrash Metal without a staccato dominating riff exposing the ripe intellect rasps of the vocalist(s) and the plundering thunder of the drummer. If you don’t feel the music and the power, you don’t have music. You just have bland and moderation.

4) Prestige is more of a final outcome than anything else. It is what determines a band from being just average to above average or even higher. Basically, in concept, if the band has released a backlog of albums before and the new one is not up to their standard the mark out of ten will go down. If it’s the same standard it will become just average (no progression). However, sometimes progression is not always good and prestige will sort this out into the final outcome and representation of the album rating.

Simple Rating Sequence

SRS designed to sum up the above into a clear table or sequence.

1-3 : Abysmal Abomination - I got either so bored with this album I clicked off it after three or four tracks. Or the entire album was so abysmal I can’t bare to even one other ‘fan’ to painfully listen to this ear crunching album.

4 : Below Benidorm – The below average album that screams for more TLC (Tender loving care) on their production, composition or power.

5 : The Average Joe – The average album that is alright to listen to in the background. But don’t expect your friend, Joe, to like it.

6-7 : Above Average – Over the benchmark of mediocre but into the no mans land of the ‘just about got me off my chair’ syndrome. A good album, worth a download, maybe a buy for a collector of that genre.

8-9 : Super Supressive – A truly remarkable album but missing that final push into greatness.

10 : Supreme Successor – The album that is a great listen and marks the genre well.

The layout will be in order of most disappointing album(s) to the best album(s) with their rating aside their name. If the rating was re-evaluated for the first time it will be in bold, for the second blue and for the third red.

**Alestorm’s new album is good for new listeners of the artist but for a continuation of the pirate themed stories of the last album and the debut, this one very much disappoints. (Hence the two ratings, (6) is the overall discography rating (8) is the individual album rating.)
