The Strokes: My Favorite Band

"What's your favorite band?". I used to hate that question because I could never come up with an answer. Well one band has made me love that question, because now I don't have to think twice about my answer. The Strokes have been my favorite band for about three years. I discovered the band in 2004 I believe, through the song "12:51". The rest was history (haha). But seriously The Strokes are truly special. They are the only band who captured my interest enough to get to know the guys behind the music. I wouldn't call myself a "fangirl"….but wow have I got a thing for Julian Casablancas. That messy, dirty hair…those deep brown eyes…and of course, that voice of his. I can honestly say I LOVE The Strokes. The music, the band, the feeling I get from the music, everything. Now when somebody asks me who my favorite band is, I say (almost shout) without hesitation, "The Strokes!"

The following songs are a couple of my favorites, including a peek at the lyrics and a small explanation as to why they are my favorites.

What Ever Happened
I wanna be forgotten
And I don't wanna be reminded
He said please, don't make this harder
No, I won't yet

What a great song to begin Room On Fire with. I honestly cannot get tired of it. The lyrics are probably some of my all-time favorite Strokes lyrics…I mean whenever I sing the opening line I feel something inside of me, you know? But the solo is probably my favorite part…it inspired me so much that I had to learn it, although I can't play it NEARLY as well as Nick. I try though hehe.

12:51
Kiss me now that I'm older
I won't try to control you
Friday nights have been lonely
Take it slow but don't warn me

The song that started it all for me! This is probably my favorite song ever…not only because of the sentimental value of it, but because it's got the catchiest riff I've ever heard in my life. It's definitely a "feel good" song. Those who first listen to it can't help but tap their foot, bob their head, or hum along…trust me I've witnessed this.

Hard To Explain
I missed the last bus, I take the next train
I try but you see it's hard to explain
I say the right things but act the wrong way
I like it right here but I cannot stay
I watch the TV, forget what I'm told
Well, I am too young, and they are too old
The joke is on you, this place is a zoo
you right its true

This song should have been a Single in my opinion. The fast-paced, energetic chorus is probably the coolest thing I have ever heard. And the pause in the middle of the song seriously makes me shiver. What else can I say, this song is perfection! And the music video is also pretty damn cool…gotta love that dinosaur.

Soma
When I saw her for the first time
Lips moved as her eyes closed
Heard something in his voice
"And I'll be there" he says
And he walks out
Somehow he was trying too hard
To be like them

This is the song that got me to buy Is This It (The Strokes first album). I was on one of those websites that lets you preview each song for 30 seconds, and when I got to Soma, it was love. There's something so familiar about it. I love the way Julian's voice starts out mellow then gets heavier throughout the song. It's just one of those songs that brings a smile to my face as soon as I hear the first pluck of the guitar string.

You Only Live Once
Don't, don't, don't get up!
I can't see the sunshine
I'll be waiting for you baby
'Cause I'm through
Sit me down, shut me up
I'll calm down
And I'll get along with you

This was the first song I heard from First Impressions of Earth and I was blown away! Julian's voice is so clear, the lyrics are witty, and the guitar riffs are catchy and uplifting. I had this song on repeat for the longest time when I first heard it. Actually…I still do!

Meet Me In The Bathroom
Never was on time
Yes, I once was mine
Well, that was long ago
And darling, I don't mind
Yeah, they were just two fucks in lust
Baby, that just don't mean much
You trained me not to love
After you taught me what it was.

Holy crap…this song gets me in SUCH a great mood. I can't help but dance around whenever I hear it. The melody is sooo amazing and the lyrics flow perfectly along. Definitely a song that has a special place in my heart, I can't help but grin when I hear it. And I love how Julian puts so much emotion into the chorus when he preforms it live!

Other songs you should check out are: I Can't Win, Barely Legal, Red Light, Is This It?, Under Control, and Ize of the World. But seriously every single song is brilliant. :)
