Epic Weekend

Fri 4 Jul – Sonisphere Festival 2014

Time For My Sonisphere Festival Review, I am going to go through each day and give my ratings on the bands and talk about my experiences from the festival

Thursday - Got to the festival nice and early after picking up Andy, was a shame the cd player in the car didn't work so great so we got stuck listening to the radio for a while

Found a decent camping spot athe the bottom of the hill that lead to the arena and set up which didn't take too long, had a quick beer and had to go collect my press passes which was a nightmare as noise cartel who ran the backstage area could not organise a gang bang in a brothel and gave me all the wrong stuff

On the way back I bumped into a nice australian girl who asked to stroke my beard and gave me a kiss which cheered me up, got back to camp and headed to the arena with Azz and Andy just so we knew where to go each day, chiiled out and got an early nights sleep

Friday - Actually woke up after my alarm went off which is rare, headed backstage to sort out my press stuff for the day and had a game of streetfighter with Dan Carter of Radio 1 Rock Show, also bumped into Stitch from The Defiled

Came back to camp to meet up with Azz and Andy and we headed to The Motley Brew, the best place to go at a festival for a tea or coffee, got up the arena early so had to wait a while for the first band to come on at the Jager tent

Centiment where the first band I watched, this band has a few guys from InMe in the band and are a mix of hardcore and digital music, very entertaining band, absolutely loved their song "The Kraken" get up son it's just a flesh wound, very good start to the festival 8/10

EMPIRE were on next at the Satelite stage, another great band with a frontamn who knew how to work the crowd and got everyone in a party mood, a very funky band, would love to see these again 8/10

Anti Flag were the first band I went and watched on the Apollo stage, was good to finally see them and get a good blast of punk, they got the crowd going and I enjoyed finally hearing "This is the end (for you my friend)" live, lost of jumping about and sing-a-longs 8/10

I had to pop backstage after this to interview John from Raging Speedhorn, he was an absolute pleasure to meet when I finally got in the press area and we had a good chat about the band and it's future, also nice to meet Tom Brumpton who was looking after the band

Gary Numan Official was next on the Apollo stage, Numan is the master of industrial music and proved it by showing that he has influenced many bands from nine inch nails, ministry, A.F.I and even david bowie, I could not help but laugh when people thought a song had finished, started cheering and clapping only for 4 more minutes of the song left to go, brilliant set 9/10

Limp Bizkit were up next on the Apollo stage, bizkit are one tough cookie (pardon the pun) of a band, so many people slag them off, but these are the same people who go see them live, love the show and know the words to every song, was great to hear classics like nookie and my way, also good to see them throw in golden cobra, Limp do seem to like adding bits of other songs to their own and hearing them put ludacris on and a metal crowd singing along was fun, a great cover of rage against the machine's killing in the name of made the set a great one 8/10

The Prodigy headlined the Apollo stage on Friday and were good, they started with breathe and made their way through a lot of the newer songs, not too many off the first 2 albums, me and andy had our own rave area set up which started small but soon became a big mass rave area, was a shame prodigy didn't play out of space, but I enjoyed them none the less 7/10

Friday ended with us going back to camp and finding some very arrogant french pricks had taken over our camping area blocking me from getting into my tent until I had a go at them, luckily the big fat ring leader of their group listened to me and apologised, although his girlfriend had the most annoying laugh I have ever heard, was lucky to get enough sleep that night

Saturday started well, got up at about 6 and went for a walk, bumped into a few old friends and had a good chat, popped backstage quick and had a talk with the metal hammer crew until we got interupted by a very rude bunch of cunts known as Gojira, they were spitting at people backstage and screaming and shouting, just because you are in a band does not mean you can be a dickhead

Headed back to camp to grab andy and azz, headed to the motley brew for my morning coffee and got ready for todays bands

The first band on Saturday was TesseracT on the Apollo stage, I do like this band but they were extremely lackluster which lead to me leaving their set early due to being bored 4/10

Alestorm started on the Saturn stage and played a great set of pirate metal, lots of dancing, drinking songs and laughs, love this band a lot, good to here claasic songs and new songs 9/10

BABYMETAL were nest on the Apollo stage, a band that had everyone curious to see if they lived up to the hype and they damn sure did, they opened the set with a mythology cideo about a fox god who got them together to unite metal which made the crowd laugh, the band opened with Gimme Chocolate and the crowd went fucking mental, circle pits, moshing and more, I enjoyed seeing the dance routines and have learnt a few mosh pit moves from the band, extremely suprised how good they are live, got to meet the girls backstage after their set and got a hug from them, extremely polite young women 9/10

Chas and Dave came on next on the Saturn stage and gave the crowd a right cockney knees up, me and any danced the cockney knees and elbows and I enjoyed hearing rabbit whilst a guy dressed as bugs bunny crowdsurfed, chas and dave even got a circle pit going, good to have a band like this to break the norm 9/10

Ghost were next on the Apollo stage, a very strange band to see live as they are so mellow musically but dark lyrically, the songs sounded good but they are a band that are much better on cd than live 6/10

Anthrax followed on the Apollo stage with a great set, had to watch most of it from far back as I had to rush off during their set to talk to Sebastian Bachs manager, who is a nutcase, but I enjoyed what I heard and they always put on a great show 7/10

Had to spend a bit of time with Sebastian Bachs manager who kept fucking things up for the interviews but luckily Sebastian Bach came out, sorted out a quick chat and was very nice to me, although he did not allow photos

I also bumped into Pete Spiby of Black Spiders backstage and have a quick chat, pleasent guy

Carcass were the next band I went to watch on the Saturn stage, I managed to get right at the front and really enjoyed hearing them open with corporal jigsore quandary, I managed to jump in the circle pit for a bit and enjoy how heavy they are 9/10

It was time For Bruce Dickinson's Dog Fight which to be honest was not as great as I hoped, just a few old planes going in circles, no music on the ground to hype it up

Slayer band were next on the Saturn stage, a band I absolutely fucking love and was hoping they would make up for a poor show at bloodstock last ar, they blasted through a very hea set and me and my brother enjoyed it a lot, got myself headbanging to skin mask and war ensemble, absolutely epic 10/10

I went backstage after this and saw Kerry King chasing people on his golf cart, I also met his personal assistant who has to wear the setlist on his shirt for Kerry King to read when they play, which made me laugh

I also managed to bump into Ol Drake and Alestorm back stage during my walk back to the arena in time for Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden headlined the Apollo stage on the Saturday, blasting through the classics, this set was much better than when they last headlined, enjoyed singing along to wasted years 8/10

Also during their set I bumped into Herman Li from Dragonforce, me and Andy also met the bass player from babymetal during Iron Maiden and he seemed more happy to see us than we werey humbled

Me and Andy also tried one of the Eddie burgers from half man half burger for dinner on Saturday and gotta be honest, definitely not worth how much they cost

We got back to camp to find the french fucks has trashed our sitting area by throwing their rubbish and fires in our bit, so I just grabbed it all and dumped it inside their tent, seems that fench people are my main problem at this festival

Headed to sleep only to be woken up on Sunday at 5am by one of the french couples having a domestic dispute, heard the guy punch his girlfriend and went to get out my tent to sort things out, luckily the police had already come over and broke it upespite the french guy saying it was ok to hit his girlfriend, cunt

Got out of my tent to be met by 2 geordie magicians, who had brought me cider and wanted to show me some card tricks, very cool guys and they did great tricks, even did a few on my brother when he woke up

Headed to the arena for Sunday's fun started off at the motely brew again, seriously best place to grab a drink in the morning, and made my way to the Apollo Stage

Gojira started the day on the Apollo stage, and by satan they are absolute shite live, I love Gojira on cd, but the few times I have seem them live they have sucked, very dissapointed with them today 0/10

Devin Townsend Project were up next on the Apollo stage, loved how melodic they are and the funny banter from Devin, this chilled me out a lot 7/10

Airbourne came out next on the Apollo stage, me and my brother love airbourne and they kept their promise to me to play "chewin the fat" after not playing it in London, only issue I had was they seemed to lack their usual enthusiasm, but I still enjoyed their set 7/10

Reel Big Fish were on the Saturn stage and god damn they are fucking amazing live, they had the crowd in stitches with their joking about, sing-a-longs and the song which was the same song again but in different styles, loved the death metal version, had a good dance along to this 10/10

Dropkick Murphys followed on the Saturn stage, a band I have wanted to see for a long time and unfortunately missed at download 2012 as I was too busy watching an absolutely shite soundgarden, the murphys kicked off an amazing set and played the songs I wanted to hear, going out in style and johnny I hardly knew you, stood out, the crowd went mad for this band and enjoyed it 10/10

Me, Andy and Azz then went off for a break and I grabbed the best drink of the weekend, a 3 flavoured shaved ice with cherry, raspberry and apple flavour, it cooled me down from my sunburn and we found some decent shade to relax in

Blaas of Glory were playing right next to us, so we got to hear a few songs, including the final countdown, I also got to meet a guy who had the best Captain Spaulding costume I have ever seen

Raging Speedhorn headlined the Jager tent on Sunday, and fuck me they brought the house down, it was absolutely fucking immense, massive circles pits around the bollards, I managed to bash my leg on one which hurt, but fuck it I was too happy watching the band of the weekend to care, glad to hear thumper and the gush live again 10/10

After speedhorn finished I managed to meet Dave and Gordon from the band for a quick chat and photo, and found out they are touring in december, I am definitely going

Metallica ended the weekend as headliners on the Apollo stage, playing a set chosen by fans, and despite not many suprising songs being added, I really enjoyed hearing them finally play whiskey in the jar 9/10

Overall this was an epic weekend, thanks to my brother Azz and Andy for a great time
