close, but new wave (brighter) and post-punk (darker) are not sub-genres of either. both are children (sub-genres) of punk, and the synth doesn't determine how's a band post-punk or not, people on the no wave scene (child of post-punk) didn't use much synth, same with stuff like gang of four or mission of burma... and i wouldn't say that you can't see the difference, rather, that at times, some musicians did stuff that could fit into both genres (some xtc has overtones of post-punk, but they're undoubtely new wave, depeche mode is rather stark at times and black celebration sounds pretty darkwave to me, the cure's diversity could range from accesible pop songs -new wave- to stuff like pornography -post-punk- to a mix between both, and siouxsie started as a post-punk outfit only to become progressively accesible later... and of course new order that made the transition you mention.)

post-punk is darker than new wave, new-wave is a subgenre of post punk, they use a lot of synths and melodies. Anyway, sometimes you can't see the difference, like some songs of the cure, xtc or siouxsie, or the transition of new order from post to new wave, even depeche mode, with that extreme synth sound has a lot of the post-punk sound

@palofmoon the biggest confusion in styles is probably college rock vs post punk because then it comes down to era. Post Punk generally encompasses 1978 - 1983. Sub genres of post punk would be no wave (James Chance, Lydia Lunch, Konk, Liquid Liquid etc), dark wave (ie early goth, Bauhaus, Siouxsie Joy Division), early industrial (Leather Nun, Throbbing Gristle) and fall out of punk bands (Wire, PIL, Magazine, The Fall). New Wave is power pop bands, synth pop, ska revival, and a lot of New York punkers like Blondie and Talking Heads.
