Nu metal

Brian "Head" Welch

"Nu-metal is for poseurs." only if you think it's metal. I know it's pop rock disguised as metal. It just kicks ass.

Nu-metal is for poseurs. Now, technical gothic metal, that's a style of real metal!

Nu metal is more of a scene than a genre. How else could we have Linkin Park, Slipknot, System of a Down, and Evanescence in the same category?

"we know you hate the music here" No, that's totally wrong. I didn't listen to nu metal for months, but I still think that it is cool.

The whole nu metal thing is a new genre that evolved from metal, punk and hip hop, but it lacks too much metal elements to be called a classic metal subgenre.>>> Except you haven't really given a good definition. Really what you gave is not only applicable for some Nu Metal, but also Progressive Rock and Hard Rock. Also, where is the punk in Nu Metal? If you say there is, then you are arguing against yourself as Metal also borrowed from Punk, as I touched on below.

There are several parts where the guitar stops playing for some time (which also often happens in RATM). ALSO There is no guitar solo (metal without guitar solo, lol). >>> The significance of the guitar stopping is just to create tension - which arguably Thrash Metal tries to do also - see the breakdown in Angel of Death / the rhymtic break in Hit the Lights. Furthermore Slayer, Shadows Fall and Iron Maiden all use a start-stop tension building technique. As for no solos in Nu Metal? Disturbed's Striken, Slipknot's Pulse of the Maggot's, Stone Sour's Get Inside, Static-X's cannibal, Mudvayne's Cradle, Korn's Predictable for a drum & bass solo. Slipknot use drum solos, and Mudvayne also use bass solos. There is also hardly ever any solos in BM, with a few exceptions such as Peste Noire.

The whole harmonics are made by the guitar, the melody by the vocalist and/or another guitar. Just listen to "Swallow" by Korn for example. That's a classic nu metal song which I really like. But the guitar works more as a rhythm instrument there and the drumming isn't really hard and varied and isn't really that important. >>> That's because of the chords are used primarily to create dissonance i.e. lack of harmony, via minor seconds and tritones as I said earlier, but also major sevenths. What you are basically saying is there are no leads and little to no harmony, well that could be said about a lot of Black Metal also. Drumming not that important? I would say drumming is very important in Nu Metal, and it's not just hip-hop beats, if that were the case why do Slipknot have multi percussionists and both Korn and Slipknot use gong bass drums and hyper sized toms?

heavy sound, hard, diverse and dominant (!) drums (often with double bass drums). >>> Most Nu Metal bands have a heavy sound, it depends how you define "heavy." Transcribing the music to a piano is the best way to measure heaviness, and a Nu Metal song such as Coal Chamber's Loco / Korn's "It's On! / Mudvayne's Dig will sound equally as out of pitch as a Death Metal song. As for drums, you are being very general. Motorhead were the first to use double bass, but also used a bit of influence from Punk with the alternation of kick and snare with little syncopation. This is not "diverse" drumming at all, and a lot of metal drumming is very basic and minimalistic instead of dominant - especially in Black Metal Also, going by your definition Slipknot's drumming is very Metal.

Metal is about riffs that are based on harmonic progressions in minor and modal scales... >>> I can't speak for every band as I haven't studied them but Korn use a lot of minor second chords (only 2 in major scale, and Korn don't use them), and Slipknot use E minor chords frequently. As for modal scales, it's simply because Heavy metal stems from E Minor (Black Sabbath) and this is an easy chord to create Locrian based solos from the open E sixth string, and revert back to minor harmonic scales. However, I'm yet to rule out Nu Metal using note structures based on Dorian, Phrygian or Aeolian modes.

I don't know why you nu metal fans insist so hard on that your music is "real metal". Just be glad that your favourite bands created and pioneered a new genre.

"Also, I don't say that nu metal bands can't build up a haunting, aggressive or "evil" atmosphere, but there are metal bands that just can do that better." No one does atmosphere better than Deftones, they were masters of using turntables just for that. In fact Nu Metal has for more textures than Classic Metal, I fail to see the validity to this argument either.
