スマッシング・パンプキンズ（The Smashing Pumpkins）は、1988年にアメリカ合衆国シカゴでビリー・コーガンを中心に結成されたロックバンド。1990年代以降のロック音楽を代表する存在である。日本における略称は、「スマパン」。

現在のメンバーはビリー・コーガン（ボーカル・ギター）、ジェフ・シュローダー（ギター）、ニコール・フィオレンティノ（ベース）、マイク・バーン（ドラムス・パーカッション）。

全作品を通じて、ドラマチックな楽曲構成やその歌詞は他のバンドの追随を許さないものである。一方、ボーカルのビリーの個性的な声から、ロックファンの間でも賛否両論に分かれる。

来歴

デビュー時期から頻繁にニルヴァーナと比較され、陽の目を見ない時期もあったが（ギグを行えば常に会場を満員にしていたニルヴァーナに比べ、客が数人ということもざらだったらしい）、2作目のアルバム『サイアミーズ・ドリーム』（1993年）と、続く2枚組の大作アルバム『メロンコリー　そして終りのない悲しみ』（1995年）でその独創性を発揮し、一躍オルタナティブ・ロックのアイコン的存在となる。

しかしそんな中、1996年7月、ツアー中のニューヨーク市においてヘロインの薬物中毒によりサポートメンバーのジョナサン・メルビンが死亡するという事件が起こった。事件当夜、ジョナサンと同室でドラッグを使用し、逮捕されたドラマーのジミー・チェンバレンはバンドから解雇された。

そしてバンドはドラム不在により音楽性を変更し、ピアノやアコースティックギター、そしてリズムマシーンを使いアルバム『アドア』（1998年）を制作する。同作は、ニューウェーブからの影響を感じさせるメランコリックで非常に美しい作品であり、日本では高い評価を得た。だが、ギターロックを期待していた米国のリスナーに理解されず売上が伸びなかった。

1999年、ビリーの呼びかけによりジミーがパンプキンズに復帰することになった。しかし、そのことに不満を持っていたダーシーが、ジミー復帰後間もなくして脱退する。2代目ベーシストとしてメリッサ・アウフ・ダー・マウア（Melissa Auf der Maur）が加入。しかし、この時すでにバンド内では解散が決定しており、farewellアルバム(さよならアルバム)として2000年に『マシーナ/ザ・マシーンズ・オブ・ゴット』を制作し、その後の12月2日、デビューと同じステージでのライブをもって解散した。

    Jimmy Chamberlin and Loz Colbert (Ride) are the only two drummers that have really impressed me. I'm not a drummer myself so I don't know much about it but when I listen to those two... I kinda freak out (in a good way ofc)

    Their 90's albums are magnificent. [3] I miss the old pumpkins as well, when I was about 16 they were my favourite band. :D New album is good, though.

    Jimmy was as crucial to Billy in otherworldly brilliance and talent in getting me into the Pumpkins. they're still musically above many bands today, but yes, without listening to Jimmy it feels like an injustice to the Pumpkins and for music in general. As a musician, Jimmy IS one of the greatest ever, and he's a prodigy in the same vein as Jaco Pastorius, be it on the drums. He without a doubt is; and really, it's a shame/crime more people don't really know much about Jimmy Chamberlin. What's absolutely astonishing to me is the fact that even many fans of the band like him, but seem to gloss over a lot of his wonderful nuances. It's a real pity that he never really did get the regards he deserves.

    I only started liking Adore recently. The production on some of the tracks like Appels + Oranjes sounds cheesy but I'm convinced tracks like Annie Dog and For Martha are some of their best.
