ストーン・テンプル・パイロッツ(Stone Temple Pilots)は、アメリカのロックバンド。通称は「ストテン」「STP」など。

90年代のグランジブームの代表的なバンドの一つ。重厚なギターリフを基調としたダークな曲から、パブ・ロック、カントリーなどに影響された幅広い音楽性を持つ。

1990年代初頭、ロサンゼルスでボーカルのスコット、ベースのロバートが中心となり「Mighty Joe Young」を結成。後にギターのディーン（ロバートの兄）、ドラムのエリックが加わり「Stone Temple Pilots」と名前を改める。

サンディエゴのクラブ・シーンでパワフルなライブパフォーマンスが評判を呼び、アトランティックレコーズと契約を交わす。レッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズやパール・ジャムとの仕事で知られるブレンダン・オブライエン（結局最後まで彼らはブレンダン以外のプロデューサーを使わなかった）を迎えて製作された1992年発売の1stアルバム」Core」はビルボードチャートの2位を記録する大ヒットとなり、’Plush’や’Sex Type Thing’といったシングルヒットも出した。

1994年、2ndアルバム」Purple」でニルヴァーナ、パール・ジャムの二番煎じバンドといった揶揄を吹き飛ばし、アルバムはビルボードの1位を記録したが、アルバム発表直後、スコットがドラッグ不法所持で逮捕。この時からカリスマ性のあるフロントマン、スコットと他の三人の溝が生まれる（そして結局はおそらくそれが終焉の原因となった）。

そういったいわばピリピリしたバンド内の人間関係のまま製作された1996年発表の3rdアルバム」Tiny Music…Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop」は同じ屋根の下で生活しているにもかかわらずスコットと3人が顔を合わせないという異常な状況で製作された。

そういった状況にもかかわらずバンドはヘヴィ一辺倒（元々メロディを大事にするバンドだった）から一歩抜け出し円熟した楽曲でアルバムはチャートの4位を記録する大ヒットとなるが、バンド内の亀裂は深く、逮捕-刑務所を繰り返すスコットに業を煮やした3人は無名のヴォーカリストを加え「Talk Show」というスコット抜きのSTPを始動。さらにスコットの方もソロアルバム」12 Bar Blues」を発表、もう両者の溝は修復不可能なように思われた。

しかし、「STP以上のパワフルな興奮が得られない」事に気づいた両者は関係を修復し、1999年、4thアルバム」No 4」を発表、ビルボード6位を記録したアルバムのプロモーションの前にまたもスコットがドラッグ不法所持で逮捕され、三人は彼の出所を待ち、ツアーを成功させると、2001年、新作のレコーディングを開始した。同年、5thアルバム」Shangri-la-dee-da」を発表、チャートアクションこそ9位と振るわなかったがメロウかつヘヴィな楽曲の数々に改めて孤高のバンドたる実力を見せ付けるも、「hello,it’s late」と歌われたこのアルバムを最後にスコットは元ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズのメンバーと組み、ヴェルヴェット・リヴォルヴァーを始動、STPは解散することになる。解散後、他のメンバーの目立った活動はしばらくなかったが、2005年にロバートとディーンがフィルター (バンド)のリチャード・パトリック、デイヴィッド・リー・ロスのバンドなどで活躍するセッション・ドラマーのレイ・ルジアと新たなバンドArmy of Anyoneを結成し、2006年にデビュー・アルバム」Army of Anyone」をリリースした。

    Bennington sounds better with STP than in LP [2] He is actually bringing his grungey style back, so it should be potentially better.

    Don't care how people try to look at it. Replacing your lead singer is no different than replacing your lead guitarist or even your keyboardist (if applicable). STP can continue to be STP because 3/4ths of the band are still part of it and they have no need to change it. There are bands that go through double digit lineup changes and keep the name. I think you all can survive STP changing one member once. This doesn't erase all the Weiland music from your memory. You can give up on a band whenever you want and their music that you like will still exist.

    I am a Linkin Park fan and I'm aware that Stone Temple Pilots fans may feel disappointed because of Chester Bennington took Scott's place, anyway you should respect the whole band's choice. A band is not just a singer. Mostly it's only Scott's fault. Chester Bennington is a great singer and STP couldn't choose a better one.
