Been a top listener for 3 years, in a row, now and reaching 4000 scrobbles - and thrice as many if before-last.fm plays were counted. One of the greatest bands ever (so happy to have seen them live). And (and I know this is unpopular) Rocket Cottage is their best - but it's all good.

Conversation I recently had: "I'm really into British folk like Steeleye Span." "I like Steely Dan too, but I don't think they are British and I wouldn't call them folk."

Check out [artist]Malicorne[/artist], especially "Almanach". I like to say they were the french Steeleye Span. They had a darker feeling and more prog structures though.

"Boys of Bedlam" and "Twa Corbies" are about as dark as it gets lyrics wise, and Steeleye Span add a lot of atmosphere too. "Sheep Crook and Black Dog" is good too.

So...my favourite tracks are dark ones such as Long Lankin, Little Sir Hugh and You Will Burn, or dark-sounding ones such as Cam Ye O'er Frae France, Gaudete or Lovely On The Water. Can anyone recommend more Span tracks similar to these?

In 1972, I bought a SS album for the first girlfriend of my life. She was into traditional folk music. Neither of us had ever heard of SS or any of their music. Unfortunately, my love of SS lasted while my love of this girlfriend did not. However I did get lucky and remained in love with the better one of the two choices. Great music and Great memories!

My father had a sleu of SS records. He introduced me to these when I was 4, and I've loved them ever since....They always make me feel young again! I try to introduce them to people I meet.....even though it never works. I will always love SS, until I die.

Going to see them next week. Should be a good night. Dad has always played them. It's the only music taste we share!
