Eliza, I agree that no label fits ultimately for Neurosis, however I think "atmospheric sludge" really is the most appropriate you could pull off if you had to. 'hardcore' doesn't make any sense, but "atmospheric sludge" links Neurosis up with other bands that reflect their kin, like YOB, Ufomammut, Amen Ra, Kongh, Jesu, bands that can be respectively categorized among Neurosis. I agree that all labels will lessen the value of any music, but its good to be able to give someone who's never heard Neurosis a loose idea of what they may be in for, atmospheric sludge is good enough.

Critic Brian Russ has described them as “atmospheric hardcore”. (quote from Bio) I'd say, Brian the critic should have tried a bit harder. a 16-year-old would call it atmospheric hardcore. Someone with any taste and knowledge in music would be left speechless.
