1995年、フィンランドのヘルシンキで結成。
キーボーディストのヴィレ・ソルヴァリは、FINTROLLでもトロルホーンとしてキーボードを担当している。


ブラックメタルとフォークメタルを基調にした音楽性は、いわゆるヴァイキングメタルと呼ばれるものだが、メンバーはバンドの音楽性を「エピック・ヒーゼン・メタル」と呼び、ヴァイキングメタルのイメージから離れようと努めている。
しかし一方で、」Jumalten Kaupunki」のPVでは、十字軍らしき一団と森の中で戦闘していたり、メンバーが鎖帷子を身を纏って演奏したりするため、イメージ的に区別しにくい面もある。


2008年に開かれた「Pagan Fest」というフェスティバルに参加したところ、バンドは(何らかの理由で)ドイツの反ファシズム団体からネオナチであるという非難を受け、ヴィレが同じくフェスティバルに参加しいていたTýrのメンバーと共にビデオメッセージで自らがナチズムの信奉者ではないことを表明するという事態に追い込まれた。

後に、ギタリストのミトヤはドイツのウェブジンのインタビューを受けた際「レイシストとナチスを強く軽蔑している」と発言している。

    Yeah, it's not just the fact it's 30 minutes, it's the amount of times you have to listen to it to truly appreciate it and understand it, that is the daunting part.

    Yup, what you said about Tulimyrsky. But also people just simply don't have time for a 30 minute song as often as they have time for a 3 minute song (10 times less often, actually), mental hurdle or not. :> By the way, I guess I like VKKM the least... Voimasta ja kunniasta, Verisäkeet and Kivenkantaja are better for me as a whole. That said, I've listened to VKKM less than other Moonsorrow albums. Maybe it could still dawn on me one day. :P Kuolleiden maa is among the very best songs I've ever heard though.

    While I love the long ones (the three +-30'), and would consider them to be amongst the greatest songs in all of metal, VKKM is probably my favourite album as a whole.

    Yes, it's a mental hurdle for some to listen to these 30 minute songs, it was for me... but once you do learn them you get a lot more out of them. Tuleen Ajettu Maa is my favourite MS song. Closely followed by the other 2 long songs.

    Tulimyrsky is definitely appreciated, but it seems just natural that those 30-minute songs don't get scrobbled as much as the shorter ones. Although their older stuff is much easier to listen as the tracks are shorter and, well, less complicated

    Tulimyrsky might not be as listened as some others as it doesn't appear on a studio album per se. It's only on an over an hour long "MCD". :D I'd say that it's... the best song by Moonsorrow and easily one of the best songs I've ever heard? Pretty darn close anyway.

    I took all the song lengths from Moonsorrow into consideration, and calculated the median and average song length. Median is 513.5s (which is ~8:33) and average length is 605s (so, 10:05). :)

    Actually their songs average at about 8-9 minutes. lol he only has 106 plays now. i would have gotten at least to 200 scrobbles in 2 months if i was kicking myself for not having more.

    I always kick myself for not listening to this band more because I know they could be one of my big favorites [2] totally agree... such an awesome band, just not so good for the casual listening...
