Some Hallowe'en playlist introduced me to Found Love in a Graveyard by Veronica Falls, so that seems as good a place as any to kick off the November blog. Alas, it probably is the best track on album Veronica Falls, but what a track it is: like old-school Interpol laced with real venom during the verses, and old-school Lush for the chorus. Album closer Come On Over is a bit of alright too. I can't put my finger on a particular band (probably because of the restraining order), but it definitely brings to mind early to mid 90s mark and lard graveyard shift indie, and I can only imagine how good it must be live.

Another new acquisition at the start of the month was Florence + the Machine's Ceremonials. Not sure if the title is meant to sound like an euphemism (as in, "ooh, I've got a right rash on my Ceremonials"), but the albums a pretty joyless affair. Admitedly I was a latecomer to début Lungs, but it had the right balance between heart and bluster. …

Firstly, a quick dip back into my March blog: The Raveonettes' Raven In The Grave was SOOO worth sticking with: while the first cursory listens revealed a couple of diamonds, further listening revealed layers of glorious sound, the bands usual rock'n'roll influences spliced with late 80s and early 90s indie rock, maybe like Buddy Holly would've sounded covering pre-Loaded Primal Scream or early Stone Roses with a fuzzbox.
Similar in spirit to this is The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's latest effort, Belong. One of the things I loved about the Pains' debut was that there were so many influences all worn heart-on-sleeve, but mixed so well. This manages something similar, though the influences have moved on a bit from 80s My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain and Wedding Present to 90s MBV and a more polished sound all round. Opener Belong kicks off sounding like The Sundays (and in particular Another Flavour, or the Newman and Baddiel In Pieces theme tune as it's probably better known), before a big Bob Mould/Sugar riff stomps in. …
