It's really cool and it goes to show how prolific he was that in the midst of recording and putting out all these albums of his own from 1970 to 1973, Donny also put his Midas touch on Aretha's Young, Gifted & Black and Let Me in Your Life albums by playing keyboards or organ on a lot of those tracks including some of her most successful and acclaimed in that decade like "Daydreaming", "Rock Steady", and "Until You Come Back to Me". It's neat to see Aretha and Donny in pictures together from that time, they seemed to be good friends with very similar musical sensibilities. It's very appropriate that Donny played organ on Aretha's version of "To Be Young, Gifted & Black" too, it plays like a looser, funkier, more upbeat updated version of Nina Simone's original.

Greatest version of "To Be Young, Gifted & Black" ever. Donny has so many criminally underrated tracks but that might be the most. Such a different take from the original style, the stripped down production without the choir at the beginning, just his voice and the interplay of his piano, Rhodes, and organ with a simple drumbeat as well as just the slowed down tempo allows the song to really breath and the listener to really absorb every powerful lyric. His cover actually makes you feel like you're sitting there in church. Seemingly simple at first yet totally brilliant, Donny already cemented his place in soul history with this one song on his debut album. He makes it feel so heartfelt and powerful, the gradual build-up to the angelic background vocalists then how his voice just soars and becomes more impassioned, the riffs becoming more intricate and funky leading an incredible triumphant climactic moment at the end with his awesome falsetto. So musically gratifying.

Donny just sounds so honest without an ounce of being preachy or pretentious, the message really connects - even if you're not black. His version manages to reach a higher level of grandeur and gravitas, it's a monumental recording... I feel like he leaned into this style of music on his next release, his self-titled album probably because it was such a strong suit for him. That was just his wheelhouse that nobody could do better than him in and it seemed to come so naturally too.

Obviously his voice never leaves you, so much more can be said about Donny. He was a real virtuoso, genius and perfectionist in the same league as all the supreme greats, Stevie, Marvin, etc. Wasn't quite as commercially successful, kind of disappeared from the scene after his magnum opus (open to debate) Extension of a Man, had mental illness issues which no doubt impeded his life, career, and musical aspirations, yet contributed so much in a relatively short span, truly an indelible, very unique sound never to be replicated. I really love this guy, when I read or hear about how other musicians he played with talk about him I'm somehow even more impressed, how he wouldn't let the musicians leave the studio until they got the music just right to how he wanted it sound or how he never made a mistake musically whether when he was performing in the studio or for an audience, everything he played just sounded right somehow or shall we say ingenious.

Stuff like that just makes his music make more sense to me, like no wonder it's so darn replayable and so darn GOOD. Donny wanted to be the best - hell, he damn well might have been the best or could have been - and he held all the musicians he played with to his standard of greatness. This comes through in all his records, but the music just sounds so effortless that you never stop to think about how much hard work went behind it all. Really appreciate Donny for that, also just love the aesthetic and tastefulness of his music, very organic smooth feel, could always feel the church roots, if not on the surface then right beneath, more often than not grounded with his beautiful piano, organ, or Fender Rhodes keyboard playing, never too much or too little going on, always just right. He was really onto something incredible with his sound, lyrics and his uplifting spirit in his music. All the music we got from him is priceless. His music just feels like the purest expression.

Reading about how he died was heartbreaking. I have never heard a voice like his, and probably never will again...
