Damn, Cinder's awesome. Great Waves is probably better than any Cat Power song I've heard so far too. :P

yeah i found i actually had 'whatever you love, you are' on my computer, it's a beautiful album from start to finish. i picked up 'cinder' from a local record store for only $12, havn't listened to it properly yet though. thanks for the shout birdsandtea, i really can't believe i've ignored these guys for so long, plus the fact i'm from Melbourne, which is pretty much a crime in itself.

just dive right in, radtron! if it helps, most people i know have started with ocean songs, horse studies or cinder and have branched off from there. cinder is frequently named the most accessible in reviews because the songs are shorter, but the epic songs on the previous albums are really gorgeous and amazing and shouldn't be disregarded, in my opinion.

OK, all their albums are great but 'Whatever you love, you are' is by far their best; why so little mention of it?? This my friends is an outrage!!! ;->

Warren Ellis is such a wondeful musician, and to think if he wasn't in the Bad Seeds I would have never heard this band. Deep Waters was the first song I heard, and was the perfect starter as it is magnificent.

This band used be $2 to watch at a pub in Richmond during the week circa 93/94- god I miss those days, holding Warren's violin whilst he took a bow at a show at the Forum...ahhh..good times and amazing memories - their music is Melbourne, is the dark bars, is remembering a time I said I loved you, a time when everything was fucked...

I started thinking about the title story of my book while listening to Dirty Three's 'Some Summers They Drop Like Flys'. Please read it. Take a look at www.myspace.com/clarewigfall for more information and come befriend me - THE LOUDEST SOUND AND NOTHING, Clare Wigfall, Faber & Faber, September 2007

I think 'Horse Stories' is far and away their greatest record.. that 1, 2, 3 opening punch of '1000 miles', 'sue's last ride', and 'hope' hasn't been equaled, actually it's more 1, 2, 3, 4. 'Ocean Songs' is great too, a little quieter, the title's certainly apt.. 'Horse Stories' is more unhinged and dangerous, more in your face, but just as beautiful, Jim's drumming's particularly breathtaking.
