  • The Great American Songbook and more... - 1950s

    2010年 02月 16日 06:12 by sharky1972

    latest update: 15 Feb 2010

Great American Songbook (sometimes abbreviated as "GAS") is a term referring to the interrelated music of Broadway theatre, musical theatre, Hollywood musicals, and so-called Tin Pan Alley, for a period that begins during about the 1920s and ending about 1960 with the emerging dominance of rock and roll. Including dozens or hundreds of songs of enduring popularity, the Great American songbook also became (and remains) a vital part of the repertoire of jazz musicians, who describe such songs simply as "jazz standards"...
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: Great American Songbook
Call it "Great American Songbook", call it "jazz standards" - there always have been songs that were performed by more than one musician. Sometimes it's easy to choose a favorite version - sometimes it's not because every version has its own kind of appeal - just take "Summertime" and its long way from Billie Holiday's rendition (再生Summertime, 1936) to Hildegunn Gjedrem's fine vocal jazz (再生Summertime, 2007) as an example. Here is a collection of songs from both categories performed by some of my favorite female jazz singers.

  • My talk with Patsy Moore, part 2

    2009年 10月 28日 15:05 by jwRADIO1

In the second part of my interview with Patsy Moore, we discuss her music and vision since leaving Nashville for LA and how her music literally saves her through broken relationship and her ongoing bout with cancer. Her music credits post-Nashville including working with contemporary jazz stars, Dianne Reeves and Billy Childs. The tracks sampled in this episode, “The Most Private Confessions of Saint Clair” and “The Curve”, are from Patsy’s latest release, The Most Private Confession of Saint Clair, available at Amazon and eMusic.

More on Patsy Moore can be found at her website, http://www.patsymoore.com

  • Cropping Artist Images for the Library

    2009年 08月 24日 21:24 by fmera

Following up on the earlier journal, Getting Artist Images to Look Their Best, here is a short guide to explain how images (be they square, tall, or wide) that you upload to artist galleries are cropped for eventual use in the library.

I'll use these images (taken from Simone Kopmajer's gallery) as a visual guide to show how your original artist pics will end up looking as library images. It works on the idea that cropping images square or tall - if your original shots allow this - really is the safer option, as they minimize further cropping when your images are processed. Shown below are three sample images, in square, tall, and wide formats, and beside them the actual 126s images used for the library. The translucent red masking shows where image content will be lost (or hidden from view, rather), and the window is what you'll end up with in the library:

square image - best option: full image width is retained, and only the top portion equal to approx 4/5 or 80% of the width is viewable in library (or more precisely, a w:h ratio of 126:100)

tall image - full image width is retained as with square images, and still only the top portion equal to approx 80% of the width is viewable in library. (note that the max viewable height for artist images is 1.5x the image width. any excess is cropped away.)

wide image - image is first cropped square, and then, as with square images, only the top portion equal to approx 80% of the cropped width is viewable in library.

It becomes clear that, especially when working with wide images, it's best to be sparing when cropping your originals and leave some extra room on the sides and bottom of the image. While still fully viewable in the artist page and gallery, that will be extra image content that you know you can do without (which doesn't include the lower halves of faces, bandmembers posing at the far left and right, etc. naturally).

Seeing as how the maximum image size you can have on the artist page is 252x378 (1:1.5), tall images have the added edge over wide ones by appearing relatively bigger given the same width (as evident in the images above) anyway, so that's another thing to consider.

So there you go - keep your chins up (above the red masking) ;)

This article is a working draft. Comments and questions are welcome.

  • Mais inspirada e com banda própria

    2009年 06月 19日 01:26 by felipebcruz

O espetáculo abre a temporada 2009 da série Jazz All Nights.

  • Recommendations time again

    2008年 11月 9日 08:19 by Kapitankraut

Having cleaned my recommendations of the bands Last.fm seems to think I was listening to (they can't do anything right at the moment, it seems), it's time for some more of these. Two sets only this weekend, which makes sense since I did four last time.

    1. Corrupted - "Si Mismo Defensa"
I'm thinking this would be the Japanese sludge act who sing in Spanish. This isn't overly good stuff, sounding more like underdone doom than good sludge.

    2. Gentle Giant - "Dog's Life"
A spot of proper prog, and it's lovely to hear real prog instead of the garbage people think is prog. This track is a bit on the poppy side, but the vocal arrangement is still clearly in that famous style. Goodish.

    3. Godflesh - "Head Dirt"
One of those absurdly influential bands, and the one that gave birth to Jesu. This is a very industrial-sounding track, with some muffled vocals. It's not too shabby, but methinks Godflesh is perhaps more important for what it caused, rather than how it sounded.

    4. Sherwin Gardner - "You"
Frankly, there are better Christian reggae vocalists than Sherwin - several thousand, in fact. Still, in isolation he's not too bad. This track is very disjointed-sounding, with fragments of catchy melodies around the place, but nothing consistent. A common problem for him.

    5. OK! Ryos - "Co Era So"
Some music from New Caledonia, of all places. This opens with lots of acapella singing, before breaking into a sort of Pacific/reggae sound. I'm not sure what language the vocals are in, but whatever language it is works perfectly. I can picture people swaying and clapping along even as I write this. Great stuff.

    6. Ornette Coleman - "Law Years"
The man who gave us "Free Jazz". This is a very claustrophobic-sounding track, led by the bass rather than Coleman's own saxophone, but it's not as relentlessly experimental as some of his work can be, which makes it much more accessible. When the master appears on sax, though, he brings in some lovely melodies, albeit still with that slightly odd style of his.

    7. Dianne Reeves - "Pretend"
The vocalist from that terrible film "Good Night and Good Luck", and I think this is actually a track from that album. She's got a terrific jazz voice, and the arrangement here lets her demonstrate that to very good effect. I like this, even though it's not what I'd normally listen to.

    8. Swarm of the Lotus - "Vertigo"
Very noisy mathcore-y sounding stuff. Nothing to see here.

    9. Eric Dolphy - "Hat and Beard"
Jazz clarinet, which isn't something you normally hear a lot of. While this is clearly on the avant-garde side of the coin, it's also eminently listenable. There's a very warm tone to it all (well, when there's no squeaking and squawking), and it's surprisingly catchy at times.

    10. Forgotten Woods - "Third Eye (New Creature)"
And we finish with some Norwegian black metal, and a band credited as having pioneered the depressive sound. This isn't too bad, but it only seems to come out of one of my two speakers.

  • A fine evening of vocal jazz from the radiant Ms Reeves.

    2008年 04月 10日 20:36 by mwchurst

Wed 9 Apr – Dianne Reeves

When I first came across Dianne Reeves in the 1980s straight away I became a fan, her voice is as good on record as it is live and this concert at the Barbican Theatre in Central London was no exception.

The quartet of musicians who backed Dianne were excellent and opened up the set with a good 5-10 minute set. Then Ms Reeves entered the stage and from that moment on Dianne's voice filled the venue in a way she only knows how. Performing songs from various albums including 再生Solitude and 再生One For My Baby from the film "Good Night & Good Luck" (I think Dianne has a soft spot for Mr Clooney!), her version of "Just My Imagination" from the new CD "When You Know" and the favourites 再生Better Days and 再生Testify.

Dianne's performance which about lasted 1¾ hours, had the packed theatre captivated and enthralled.

You could argue in today's world of jazz there are fine vocal singers & then on another level there's Dianne Reeves. An excellent concert.
