Dir en grey/DIR EN GREY（ディル・アン・グレイ）は、日本のロックバンド。
現在はフリーウィルに所属している。

概要
Dir en greyの意は、「Dir」はドイツ語で「銀貨」、「en」はフランス語で「〜の」、「grey」は英語で「灰色」を合わせ、“灰色の銀貨”という意味であるとされている。

言葉そのものの意味よりも、発音したときの響きが良かったからつけたというのが理由だと語っている。略称は頭部分をとって“Dir (ディル)”としたものや、和訳を略した「灰銀」が用いられることが多い。また、シングル『凌辱の雨』、アルバム『THE MARROW OF A BONE』やアメリカでの表記は大文字でDIR EN GREYとなっている。

1999年のデビュー以後もハードメイクで活動してきた彼らであったが、近年の海外進出（詳細は後述）を機にメイクやファッションはシンプルになりつつある。

楽曲はハードコア、ミクスチャー・ロック等をベースに数々のオリジナルなテイストを盛り込んでいる。また、ヴォーカルの京はグロウルやシャウトやガテラル、ファルセットなどを多用する。

作詞は全て京が行っている。作曲については薫がメインではあるが全員で行っている。アルバム『VULGAR』以降は全ての作曲のクレジットが「Dir en grey」と表記されている。これは原案の曲をレコーディング中にメンバー同士で話し合いながらさらに変化させていくスタイルをとっているためと答えている。

またグロテスクなPVを作ることでも有名で、活動初期から現在に至って、自主規制レベルの映像内容が殆どである。

Dir en greyは日本国内のみならず、アジアや欧米でも活動している。2002年には東アジア4カ国7公演（上海、香港、台湾、韓国など）を含む「列島激震行脚」と題したアジアツアーでのべ10万人を動員した。ヨーロッパでは、以前よりアルバムがドイツ・フランスで各3万枚の売上を記録していたが、2005年に欧州最大級のロックフェスティバル「Rock am Ring」、「Rock im park」への出演を果たしたことをきっかけにヨーロッパで知名度が上がり、フィンランドのヒットチャートで、アルバム『Withering to death.』がランクイン、シングル『CLEVER SLEAZOID』が初登場10位にランクインした。さらに2年連続となる同フェスでメインステージで自傷パフォーマンスを行い、ファンを熱狂させた。同様にドイツでは同アルバム(『Withering to death.』)がチャートで7位にランクインした。2006年5月にはアルバム『Withering to death.』（2006年5月24日付、米・ビルボード週間インディペンデントチャート42位。これは日本人としてはラウドネスのアルバム『LIGHTNING STRIKES』（ビルボード・アルバム・チャートで64位）に次ぐ。）を引っさげ、全米デビュー。そのデビューに先駆けたアメリカでのライブは5000人クラスのライブ会場をソールドアウトさせている。

オリコン調べでは、ドイツ、アメリカ、アイルランドで日本のバンドと言えば、「Dir en grey」という答えが80%を占め、アメリカグラミー賞の公式サイトでも紹介記事が掲載された。（日本人アーティストがグラミー賞で紹介されたのは喜多郎がグラミー賞を獲得した時以来である）。

    When I first heard DSS I thought maybe Kyô was inspired by Patton and tried to mimick his style, maybe he is a huge influence for him...and I always thought that deep inside me until I read some Deg interviews, and then I realised that Kyô might even not know who the fuck Patton is...and that makes it even more disturbing...

    Death Note's pacing was horrible. Also the series goes extremely downhill halfway in, some episodes are just extreme shite. Half the characters are retarded. To be honest I haven't even watched more than 10 naruto episodes and that was 7 years ago, so I thought it was so bad I stopped that early. I haven't really cared about animu for years though so I'm not the best person to talk about this. I still check to see if any decent mecha stuff shows up but yeah... not really

    You might not enjoy Death Note but it's a well-written and well-directed anime series, something which Naruto isn't. I mean, I liked Naruto up until the billion years of fillers that came, and up until that point the series was really entertaining (and I was a lot younger, not sure what I'd think of it in 2013), but it was never very well-written or well-directed, unlike Death Note. Hate it all you want, but it's both well-written and well-directed.

    I used to respect Wonrei, but not anymore. How can you compare Death Note to Naruto in terms of quality? The storytelling is quite excellent in Death Note, something which it is not in naruto, and it's also extremely well-written as far as the character and their development goes. Oh, and the directing, dude. The fucking direting. Do you also compare The Transofrmers-trilogi, Avatar and Inception to films like Det sjunde inseglet, Seven Samurai, The Great Dictator, Metropolis, The Birth of a Nation, Casablanca, The Gold Rush, Psycho, Rear Window, 2001: A Space Odyssey and so on as well? Jesus.
