1 Radiohead - OK Computer
(1997)
Using the textured soundscapes of The Bends as a launching pad, Radiohead delivered another startlingly accomplished set of modern guitar rock with OK Computer. The anthemic guitar heroics present on Pablo Honey and even The Bends are nowhere to be heard here. Radiohead have stripped away many of the obvious elements of guitar rock, creating music that is subtle and textured yet still has the feeling of rock & roll. Even at its most adventurous -- such as the complex, multi-segmented "
Paranoid Android" -- the band is tight, melodic, and muscular, and Thom Yorke's voice effortlessly shifts from a sweet falsetto to vicious snarls. It's a thoroughly astonishing demonstration of musical virtuosity and becomes even more impressive with repeated listens, which reveal subtleties like electronica rhythms, eerie keyboards, odd time signatures, and complex syncopations. … -

Ska Cubano!
2008年 07月 14日 01:37 by santo257
Charts - 13/4-20/4/08
2008年 04月 21日 18:50 by Kapitankraut
101 unique artists last week, although one of them was a mis-tagging, so we'll call it an even 100. More than 800 tracks played, too, which isn't bad at all. How accurate these charts are remains to be seen, due to the alleged "16 hours of power issues" (for which read "60 hours and counting") which LastFM's seen fit to have.
Needless to say, the usual fawning sycophants are going on about how wonderful the site is when everything's running properly. That was presumably before it was launched.
Anyway, these charts (the last I'll analyse before I go overseas, and possibly the last I'll analyse before I return in August) have returned from Cuba but still heavily influenced by their time there.
8. La Chicana
Argentinean tango music. One of the strangest things I think I've had on my charts in a while. I think I had the wrong idea of what this would sound like, and was expecting more of the really stereotypical tango sound with bandoneon and all. … -
Charts - 6/4-13/4/08
2008年 04月 15日 07:21 by Kapitankraut
Looking at the tag cloud, this is the week my charts went to Cuba. Nothing wrong with that at all, not by a long margin.
9. Bongo Maffin
I've already mentioned my great enjoyment of these kwaito performers, and if anything they're better the second time round. I must get my hands on more kwaito when I'm back from overseas - anything with rapped vocals in pretty much every South African language has to be worth it.
9. Los Fakires
As nearly as I can explain it, this is the sort of music that the Buena Vista Social Club project was going for, with the key difference being that this band played together for years and years. That same lovely languid vibe is there, along with the feeling that any of the musicians in question could absolutely slay all comers on their chosen instruments.
7. Iced Earth
Call them overrated (I frequently do), call them hit-and-miss (likewise), but when Iced Earth are good, they're very good. This position is due to their album "The Glorious Burden"… -
