1899 - Born on this day, Duke Ellington, composer, bandleader, pianist, died 24th May 1974. Worked with Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Billie Holiday.
1928 - Born on this day, Carl Gardner, The Coasters.
1931 - Born on this day, Lonnie Donegan, singer who launched the skiffle craze.
1942 - Born on this day, Klaus Voorman, bass, Manfred Mann, Plastic Ono Band. Voorman designed the cover for The Beatles album 'Revolver.'
1947 - Born on this day, Tommy James, The Shondells.
1949 - Born on this day, Francis Rossi, guitar, vocals, Status Quo.
1953 - Born on this day, Bill Drummond, producer, A&R man, writer, musician. Joined Big in Japan in 1977 (with Holly Johnson, later of Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Ian Broudie later of Lightning Seeds). Co-founder of Merseysides Zoo Records. Formed KLF in the late 1980’s.

1960 - Warner Brothers launched its own record label in Britain with the release of The Everly Brothers 'Cathy's Clown.'
1963 - Publicist Andrew Oldham and agent Eric Easton singed a management deal with The Rolling Stones after buying the rights to the bands first recordings for £90. They also persuade keyboard player Ian Stewart to drop out of the line up and become the bands road manager (and still play piano at the back of the stage).
1965 - Jimmy Nicol, the drummer who stood in for Ringo Starr during a Beatles Australian tour in 1964, appeared in a London Court faced with bankruptcy with debts of £4,000.
1967 - The 14 hour Technicolour Dream benefit party for The International Times was held at Alexandra Palace in London. Seeing the event mentioned on TV, John Lennon called his driver and went to the show. Coincidentally, Yoko Ono was one of the performers. Other acts to appear included The Flies, Pink Floyd, Arthur Brown, The Move and Susie Creamcheese.
1967 - Jimi Hendrix, The Walker Brothers, Engelbert Humperdink and Cat Stevens played two shows at Bournemouth Winter Gardens, England.

1993 - Guitarist, producer, Mick Ronson died of cancer. Ronson recorded and toured with David Bowie. Released the 1974 album 'Slaughter On Tenth Avenue', part of Hunter, Ronson.
1997 - Boy George was accused of being a 'professional liar' by musician singer Kirk Brandon during a London court hearing. Brandon was in court suing the singer over claims in George's autobiography that the pair had slept together.
1998 - Steven Tyler broke his knee at a concert in Anchorage, Alaska delaying Aerosmith's Nine lives tour and necessitating camera angle adjustments for the filming of the video for 'I Don't Want to Miss a Thing.'
2001 - Rod Stewart asked for a change in wedding vows bringing them up to-date and to be treated like a dog license. Stewart said 'a change is needed because they've been in existence for 600 years when people used to live until they were only 35'. -

1958 - Born on this day, Les Pattinson, Echo and the Bunnymen.
1964 - Born on this day, Mark 'Bez' Berry, Happy Mondays, Black Grape.
1964 - The Beatles appeared on the UK TV comedy program The Morecambe and Wise Show, playing ‘This Boy’, ‘All My Loving’, and ‘I Want to Hold Your Hand’ and also participate in comedy sketches with Eric Morecambe and Ernie Wise. The Beatles also held the UK and US No.1 position on this day with 'Can't Buy Me Love'.
1969 - Lulu married Bee Gee Maurice Gibb, Brother Barry was the best man. The couple split in 1973.

1995 - Oasis drummer Tony McCarrol was told by phone that he was being sacked from the group.
1996 - Bernard Edwards guitarist and producer from Chic, died in a Tokyo Hotel room after complaining that he was feeling ill. Produced ABC, Power Station and Rod Stewart.
2004 - Guns N' Roses were at No.1 on the UK album chart with their 'Greatest Hits.'
2006 - A sale of clothes belonging to Sir Elton John raised more than $700,000 (£395,000) for the singer's Aids charity. Over 10,000 pieces were sold during a five-day sale in New York City at the specially-created shop, Elton's Closet, at New York's Rockefeller Center. -

1942 - Tony Burrows, singer, Edison Lighthouse, (1970 UK No.1 single 'Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes'). Holds the record for having four records in the British Top Ten at once, all under different names. Edison Lighthouse ‘Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes), White Plains, ‘My Baby Loves Lovin', The Pipkins ‘Gimme Dat Ding,’ and the Brotherhood of Man's ‘United We Stand,’ all of which were hits in both the US and UK.
1945 - Born on this day, Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist, Deep Purple, Rainbow.
1963 - The Rolling Stones played at The Crawdaddy Club, Richmond. All four members of The Beatles were in the audience.

1968 - Phil Spector married Ronettes singer Veronica Bennett. The couple divorced in 1973.
1969 - The recording of 'The Ballad Of John and Yoko' took place, with just two Beatles, Paul McCartney and John Lennon. Paul played bass, drums and piano with John on guitars and lead vocals.
1970 - Creedence Clearwater Revival made their live UK debut when they played the first of two nights at The Royal Albert Hall, London.
1971 - The Illinois Crime Commission issued a list of 'drug-oriented records' including Jefferson Aiplane's 'White Rabbit', Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' and The Beatles' 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.'

1976 - Motown Records and Stevie Wonder announce the largest contract renewal to date, worth $13 million.
1976 - Eric Faulkner of the bay city rollers reportedly came close to death after taking a drug overdose at their manager's house while in a state of exhaustion.

2003 - A man was arrested accused of making up a Bjork concert then selling tickets. Alex Conate allegedly sold tickets worth $14,000 at $40 each after persuading a San Diego nightclub owner that Bjork had agreed to play there. He was accused of taking the money and moving to Hawaii, where he was arrested. -

1985 - Michael Jackson visited Madame Tussauds Waxworks in London to unveil his waxwork look-alike.
1986 - Metallica released their highly influential album, Master of Puppets, considered by many in the metal community to be the best metal album of all time.
1990 - During a world tour Paul McCartney played the first of 6 sold-out nights at the Tokyo Dome, Tokyo, Japan. The final night was broadcast live to venues in 10 other Japanese cities; Fukuoka, Hiroshima, Kumamoto, Matsuyama, Nagoya, Niigata, Osaka, Sapporp, Sendai and Takamatsu.
1994 - The Smashing Pumpkins were banned from appearing on BBC TV's 'Top Of The Pops', due to the content of the song "Disarm"'s lyrics. The single was this weeks highest new entry.
1999 - US music professor Peter Jeffrey went to court to sue The Smashing Pumpkins, their promoters and a company who make ear plugs after claiming his hearing was damaged at a concert in Connecticut.
1999 - Oasis agreed to pay their former drummer Tony McCarroll a one-off sum of £550,000 ($935,000) after he sued the Manchester band for millions in unpaid royalties. McCarroll had been sacked from the band in 1995.
2000 - Tom Jones won the Best male artist at this year's Brit Awards. Other winners included Travis for Best band and Best album 'The Man Who.' Best single went to Robbie Williams for 'She's The One', Five won Best pop act, TLC won Best International group, Beck won Best International Male, Macy Gray won Best newcomer and Outstanding Contribution went to The Spice Girls.
2000 - Former Bay City Roller, Derek Longmuir was released on bail on charges of downloading child pornographic images from the internet and keeping indecent videos in his home.
2003 - Ray Jackson who found fame with Lindisfarne took out legal action against Rod Stewart over his 1970s hit song ‘Maggie May.’ Jackson claimed he came up with the worldwide hit's classic mandolin melody and claimed he may have lost at least £1m because he was not credited for the track's distinctive "hook." Jackson was paid just £15 for the recording session by Stewart in 1971.
2004 - Elton John announced he was planning to marry his long-term partner David Furnish if new UK laws allowed it. A Civil Partnership bill was being passed through Parliament which would give gay couples greater rights. -
