El thrash está vivo de un modo u otro en el metal moderno; hay bandas de melodeath que incorporan sus influencias, como The Arcane Order, y por supuesto está la nueva onda de bandas que se aferran a la vieja escuela, como The Force, Bonded By Blood, Warbringer, etc. No obstante, ¿Qué ocurre con su antecesor, el speed metal? Casi parece haber caído en el olvido. Es por eso por lo que resulta agradable ver que algunas bandas nuevas lo mantienen vivo, como es el caso de Enforcer, cuyo álbum debut, Into The Night, salió el año pasado.

Y si me pidiesen que describiera el sonido de este disco, diría que es muy similar al de Killing Is My Business por Megadeth, especialmente en los riffs, y con un toque de Iron Maiden en los solos, con las clásicas harmonías de guitarra. La mayoría de las canciones son de ritmo medio-rápido (Black Angel, into the night), velocidad que es llevada al máximo en los temas que muestran más influencia de thrash (Speed Queen, scream of the savage), habiendo tambíen más lentas (on the loose). Incluso han compuesto una instrumental, city lights, cuyos ritmos iniciales parecen salidos directamente de Quest for Fire, que es posiblemente la peor canción de toda la discografía de Iron Maiden. Afortunadamente, el resto del tema es fantástico, así que no hay quejas. La voz es melódica y aguda, a menudo dando gritos salvajes y agudos que son clásicos. Más bandas deberían cantar así hoy en día.

Las letras del álbum parecen tratar principalmente sobre sexo, lo cual no es sorprendente dada la ilustración de la portada, cuya naturaleza discutiremos más adelante. No son obsesos sexuales tampoco, pues otras canciones, como la que da nombre al álbum, tratan temas más clásicos como la muerte y el infierno, y por supuesto tenemos las letras típicas sobre el cuero y el metal (Evil Attacker). ¿Qué no nos podría gustar de esa actitud?

Pero lo que verdaderamente destaca en este álbum es el bajo. Es claro y perfectamente audible, al contrario que en la mayoría de los discos de este género, y complementa perfectamente el sonido de la guitarra.

Fantástica lección de speed metal por parte de Enforcer. Y para acabar, admiremos la portada del disco:



Ese logo es totalmente de principios de los ochenta. Y no olvidemos la ilustración: una triple mujer, de la cual están a la vista dos pares de pechos. Porque un par sólo no es suficiente para ellos, así de rock 'n roll es Enforcer.

Well, seeing as how the Hallowe'en compilation came out absolutely amazingly, and I got to work with a handful of great artists, I figured it was time to start up the next ones.

I have dozens of other ideas, but these two interest me the most as of right now.

Spoken Word
I have always had a small obsession with spoken word, comedy, standup, poetry (but not readings) performances, and so on.

Therefore, I figured I might as well try this out. Since this will be the first spoken word comp, there won't be a general theme, but I would really appreciate if the material submitted was mostly all new.

No submission deadline as of right now, but if things start dragging along and I've got a good amount of material, I will figure one out.

Tracks can be accompanied / backed by music, and collaborations are welcome, but tracks with nothing but samples / pieces of music with samples or spoken word that obviously have nothing to really do with the words, are not welcome.

Female Noisers / Experimentalists
Experimental noise, dark ambient, industrial, and so on has always piqued my interest so much more than other genres, when it is made by females. This isn't a generalisation, it's the truth; males are far more likely to create experimental music than females. I've been to a lot of countries and have been involved in a lot of scenes, and it is just universal.

I've always wanted to collect a flat out female-based compilation. It doesn't HAVE to be noise by any means, but the more 'experimental', the better. Noise, power electronics, dark ambient, power violence, anti-pop, one-woman black metal, trip hop, drone, ambient, hip-hop, and so on. Not really interested in full bands or 'metal', but if you truly stand out, you might be welcome.

Absolutely no singer-songwriter / folk, unless it REALLY stretches the boundaries of those genres.

For the deadline, same as above.

Underground Hip Hop
This is pretty much self explanatory. I want to pull together all of the extended genres threaded throughout the underground Hip Hop world of today.

Any form of the genre is allowed, meaning all crossovers. Nothing pseudo-gangster. Nothing racist, nothing overly stupid, no 'bitches and hos'. You know what I mean.

Parece que últimamente está de moda que bandas veteranas decidan dar a sus antiguos discos el toque de la producción moderna, para de paso hacer que la gente sea consciente de la existencia de dichos álbumes. Tuvimos First Strike Still Deadly en el 2001, Let There Be Blood el año pasado, y ahora The Root Of All Evil, de Arch Enemy.

Ah, Arch Enemy. He sido fan suyo desde que me inicié en el metal hace un par de años, y siguen siendo una de mis bandas favoritas de melodic death metal. Una banda que ha tenido que soportar el constante debate de "Liiva VS Gossow" durante años, un debate que probablemente seguirá activo hasta el día final, y que se ha intensificado aún más, si cabe, con el lanzamiento de estas regrabaciones. Algunos dicen que fueron hechas por petición de los fans, otros, que fue una simple manera de ganar algo de dinero. A mí los motivos de la banda no me preocupan en exceso; prefiero centrarme más en la música en sí.

Y musicalmente, los primeros discos de Arch Enemy estaban más cerca del death metal tradicional que del thrash. Los solos melódicos de Amott siguen siendo perfectamente reconocibles, pero los riffs eran mucho más brutales y la música en general más intensa. Por supuesto, cabe mencionar a Liiva, su voz gruñona y grave que puede hacerse increíblemente pesada al cabo de sólo unas pocas escuchas, y compararlo con Gossow, cuyo estilo es mucho más accesible. Y a pesar de que oír las viejas canciones con Angela era el sueño húmedo de muchos fans de Arch Enemy como yo, debo decir que me encuentro prefiriendo las originales.

Creo que la razón principal es la producción; es demasiado fina. Andy Sneap tiene la costumbre de hacer que la batería suene muy clara y precisa, y ese es realmente el problema. Es lo mismo que ocurrió con Let There Be Blood: la música era prácticamente calcada, pero el disco original tenía un sonido mucho más tosco y duro que le daba encanto; realmente no hay otra palabra para describirlo. Resulta muy extraño oír blast beats en Beast Of Man con un sonido tan pulido.

Por supuesto, los temas en sí son de primera; es lo mejor de los primeros discos. Canciónes como The Immortal, Bury Me an Angel y Bridge Of Destiny son absolutamente aplastantes y del mejor melodeath que se puede encontrar. Angela hace un buen trabajo en general, pero a veces da la sensación de que intenta adaptar su tono al de Liiva y no obtiene resultados demasiado satisfactorios. El estilo ideal de Angela siempre ha sido cantar con la voz bien aguda y desgarrada, un estilo del que hizo buen uso en Wages of Sin y especialmente en el excelente Rise Of The Tyrant. Aquí, por el contrario, parece usar más su tono grave, recordando más a Doomsday Machine. No puedo evitar pensar que habría salido mejor parada de haber cantado con su tono agudo.

Como ya se ha dicho, instrumentalmente es casi idéntico, pero aún así la guitarra parece tener un tono ligeramente diferente. Es un poco difícil de explicar, pero basta con comparar el riff inicial de The Immortal en ambas versiones para notar la ligera diferencia.

En general, The Root Of All evil es un buen remake. De hecho, hace exactamente lo que se supone que tiene que hacer: oferecer producción más pulida, pero lo que realmente consigue es recordarnos la existencia de los primeros discos, y animarnos a que los escuchemos y apreciemos de nuevo.
